Locking tuners with Floyd Rose

I am building a Fender Strat EVH'ish guitar and am puzzled over the tuners to use. I want to have a Floyd Rose Trem, but not a locking nut. I have a PRS with great locking tuners, but as far as I know they don't make them for a one sided (fender) neck. Anyway, here are my questions;

1. Is it feasible to make a guitar with a FR Trem, and not use a locking nut? I bend a lot, but I really don't trem aggressively.
2. What is the BEST Fender Strat style locking tuners I can buy? I will pay for an in tune guitar!

I like Schallers the best, they feel sturdier than the Planet Waves (Warmoth has both). The Hipshots and Sperzels both have a good reputation, and may be lighter than the Schallers - though I'm not sure in this application that weight in the headstock is a bad idea. I've been tempted to try this also, as I dislike the overall tone of Floyd-inflicted guitars but I suspect a good deal of the twink comes from the nutlock, not the whammy itself. I was just listening to "Crystal Palace" and thinking Satriaini would probably just kill to be "allowed" to play a 335 or Tele sometimes for the meat, but he's stuck with Ibanez till death do 'em part. I'll bet he and Vai both pull down the shades and break into their secret anti-Floyd stash when no one's looking....

/agree The Planet Waves are kinda cheap and tempermental in my experience.

yeah, I had them, and don't like them. I prefer sperzels. schallers tend to be a bit 'whobly' and aren't that solid. well, not as I'm used to.

That's why I'm glad Yngwie didn't sell his soul to Ibanez like vai and satch (and paul gilbert, he's amazing) I love hearing someone just shred on a strat.

You can use Floyd Rose trems with most branded tuners, even Gotoh Sperzel types depending on how aggressive you wang the bar.  Without a lock nut , all gears in the tuners will react with string pull or string flop.  The idea of locking tuners is to reduce the number of winds on the string posts which may otherwise increase the possibility of the windings slipping.

To know the optimum length so that turns do not excessively overlap in the windings plus a clean slotted nut will keep a guitar in tune for longer than simply using locking tuners.

So with the price of floyd rose systems (good ones that is) what's the point of using locking tuners?? Also realize that if you try to do a dive bomb without the lock nut the string will jump out of the nut slot which is not good. If you don't want the lock nut there's no point using floyd rose, because there is the added hassle of having to cut the string during string changes and other stuff...

The only reason to use locking tuners if you have a Floyd with a locking nut is just to ease the string changes.  That is the only benefit that I can think of.  That said, I have started using locking tuners on all of my build with Floyds.

Doc I think his intentions were to use the locking tuners in lew of the locking nut. I have a Kramer from the 80's and have long since lost the lockking parts for the nuts and I have never had the strings fall out of the nut...that said I don't know the same would hold true if you were to use a regular nut.

if you use a floyd without the locking thing you lose all the advantages of floyd (double locking and stuff) and gain all the disadvantages (tools needed for string changes, etc). Besides with the locking nut you can use cheap tuners...
