Now that I think about it, 30 or 40 years ago Gibson built a bass for a thankfully short period where they couldn't decide where to put the pickup, so they mounted on a sliding arrangement of some sort. The player could move it around to get different sounds, and Gibson didn't have to spend 23 cents on a tone pot.
