Just wondering...

This idea occurred to me a while ago. A strat/p-90 hybrid pickup. Sorry for the horrible image.

I can see that winding would be a nightmare, and the magnets too, but otherwise I think it's an interesting concept.

I don't recall seeing anyone do it before, probably because its unmanageable or silly.

Still, I bet a few people would buy them so they could have the best of both single-coil worlds.

I also had brain flashes of a Strat/P90 pickup during my search for the perfect tone guitar.  My image is somewhat different from yours although the result may be the same.  I pictured it as a split-coil pickup like a Precision bass or G&L's Commenche with a Strat coil capturing 3 strings and a P90 coil capturing the other 3 strings.  The coils can be RWRP so the pickup will be quiet without hum.  Interesting thoughts.... :occasion14:

not sure what the inside of a p90 looks like but what about a p90 with alnico5 poles instead of a bar magnet and screws? kinda like the way SD stagmags are made.

Rio Grande makes P90 type pickups in both Telecaster and Strat, the "Dirty Harry" series. These have huge ceramic magnets and are pretty high output. I haven't tried the Strat versions, but have - along with some other board members - tried the Tele flavors. Not EXACTLY like a full sized P90 soapbar/dogear, but they do rock out.

If you look at the picture in this link, notice how tall off the surface the huge ceramic magnets make the pickup:

So, it would taper wider and shorter? That would be cool. Get the shorter side to have the magnets sticking out more, instead of having it elevated flat at the top. I'll break out photoshop or something tonight, I guess.

Available in humbucking versions too?

I'll see if I can get a 3d model sometime.

BTW, that should be accurate. It's not a strat, but a tele, though. I like those sounds better :P

Max gets a gold star for realizing that the winding would need to be altered in three dimensions.

Hmm... I wonder how that would sound. Mismatched coils as far as each string goes, but the overall winding should be the same. No hum, but maybe a more "complex" sound?

Did I kill this thread?  :icon_jokercolor:

Picture this, only inverted. Top half P-90, working way down to strat type. Maybe only two stages though...

Who knows, maybe it would be worth doing..?

Hmm... interesting. I'd like to see that in action. Top half is like the full p90, but the bottom will tap the p90, and add winds to make it taller?

Of course, it would differ from the previously posted idea(s) in that it will provide 2 distinct settings, while the earlier posted idea will provide a different pickup spec for each string.

Max, I like the out of the box thinking on the wide shallow / narrow tall coil.

Coil shape determines a lot of the tone.  I've said before, and its true, that old radio designers knew this, and used the tall narrow vs short fat coils in old radio sets... to their advantage.  It makes a difference.

I have NO idea what that hermaphrodite of a design would do... but I'm figuring it would be one real mo'fo' to wind either by hand or on a machine.
