Is a string retainer necessary?

I've heard that string retainers for Floyd Rose bridges help keep the tuning not as sharp.

Is a string retainer necessary or should I be fine without one?

A locking nut is usually used conjunct an FR bridge, making string trees/retainers redundant.

Yeah, why do FR guitars always have those 6-string retainers?  Seems like the locking nut would make any sort of retainer redundant, as jack said...  :icon_scratch:

If you tune to pitch without one....and then lock the nut...the strings get depressed and go so sharp that your fine tuners aren't enough to compensate.  On a 13 degree neck it isn't usually necessary.

Ah-ha, that makes sense!  Thanks blue.
