Ibanez parts - a market gap needing to be filled

dNA said:
Does anyone know if ibanez is building most of their bolt-on guitars to the same specs? Are the necks and pockets the same dimensions from model to model and from year to year?

i would have loved to get a replacement neck for an ibanez SA I had years back. It sounded great and I love the look and feel, but the neck was just awkward. not really too thin or too thick. just.. not particularly fun to play.

I know that ibanez has changed specs on RGs and JEMs recently on the neck heel width dimensions, going from 56mm to 58mm. I'm not sure about the S and SA series.

I would imagine it's things like that keeping the possibility of a replacement parts market from happening.

One of the reasons Warmoth hasn't strayed away from the Fender specs (Un-officially on here in anecdotal form by W employees) is that when they start offering different neck lengths (24 fret w/out extension)in the same 25.5" scale, it opens up a Pandora's box of ignorantly ordered parts that don't fit together or intonate properly.  There is already borderline confusion of what the 720 mod is and what it won't work on, as well as the 7/8 Strat bodies and necks.  There is also the occasional post thinking that moving the bridge forward or back but not changing the locations of fret placements on necks changes the scale.  The idea of Warmoth and it's license is interchangeable parts.  The Gecko series, new short scale and medium scale basses, and 7/8 guitar necks and bodies throw that out the window though.

Also, if making strictly Ibanez replacement parts, so much of their stuff isn't a specific standard, there's no guarantee what W made would fit an Ibby.  Their neck pockets and neck lenghts with and without fretboard overhang are all over the place.

I'm not sure I would be holding Warmoth responsible for preventing this - thet thar's talking about the need for wholesale genetic re-engineering, Pippy. :blob7:

Thanks for blowing me up dawg.  I was referring to the 35" scale request with, "..all they have to do is move the bridge back."

That does look nice, but it appears (from the signature) to be a Sims body, which I do not think I would purchase, due to customer service issues I've heard about. As well as occasional quality problems.

I've been known (quite a bit) to be wrong, but I don't think Sims makes bodies, only finishes them.  The quality, fitability, or structural integrity issues would be his doing.  But like one very justified member might forewarn, if you send him your money, there's a greater than zero chance you may never see that body.

Sorry, STDC, but remember that thread he made, with the blue guitar he cut from a billet on the CNC, then finished?

I'll find the link.  :laughing7:

Vaguely.  I remember that, but not who did it.  I mainly remember his paintwork, like the Celtic pieces.  I've been to his site too.

***EDIT***
I'm remebering more about the aluminum bodies and their names like "Vintage" and "Custom."

He do do bodies (I said do do).  I didn't remember that.

$7200, i would rather have 7 warmoths.

Sims was one of the first to do these parts, but was completely overwhelmed by the extreme demand. Missed dates, started making people really mad. Hence no more advertised parts. I can name half a dozen builders who followed the same road. Some of the websites that are still up are ET Guitars in Australia (seems like a good guy, wasn't taking orders for the past year - but seems to be accepting some orders now), then there's Legacy 1 - same story as Sims.

The Legacy 1 guy does seem to do good work and make happy customers through E-Bay under the name Depp6Guitars on E-Bay selling bodies..

Jaden Rose in England also does guitars and parts. But he seems to be focusing more on his own models.

For what it's worth, I would rather buy a neck & body from Warmoth to build my dream guitars. I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry for someone who buys without knowing what they should be looking for. If I were Warmoth, I'd simply crank up the re-stock fee, or send people over here to sell their mistakes. Measure twice cut once, or buy once if you know what I mean.

For some reason, the 7/8 size Strats with 24 frets aren't listed on the Warmoth site? Though they can be had... If they would just apply the same dimensioning to the Soloist, it'd be so close to what people want out of an Ibanez as to render a lot of these requests moot. (Though a 25.5" scale 24-fret option would be keen, too....<insert Greed emoticon/>).

I don't know why Warmoth has their "secret" options, maybe they can only do them when they're not too busy with the standard stuff. ???
