Hi there,
Not wanting to have excessive nut material up above the slots ...
... how do I get that upper part shaved down?

Will 320 grit paper be good and then lighter grits until it's smooth?
A small sanding block but using a bit of a curved action following the shape of the top of the nut?

How do you do it?

Thanks!

I'd start with that, then work your way up to a high polish.  The slots should support the string no higher than their center line, IIRC.

I go all the way up to 1200 grit, or even some polishing cloth depending on how nice the material is.

I kind of treat nuts like I do frets when it comes to final polishing.

Rough with a smooth file, then several grits of sandpaper, final buff with Meguiars white. Tape off around the nut before doing any of this, or fit it and remove for polishing before final installation.
