Hot Rod LP JR DC: Non-Warmoth metal flake extravaganza

That will really pop with a good clear coat over it. The flake will really come alive then, too.

I'm not normally a fan of metal flake finishes, but that one is so over the top that it's not really in that category. It's unique unto itself, and I must say it's quite attractive. I'll bet you're gonna get a lotta offers on it.

I got the sand paper out and got to work today.  400 grit.  I was able to knock down the runs today.  Luckily they were on the last coat sprayed and I really never hit the flake when sanding.

As a side note, spraying such big flake I needed a 2.5mm nozzle on the gun, I usually use a 1.4mm.  I really had to open it up too for the flake to come out and not clog the gun  I guess it was to much and I did not compensate with longer flash times and/or a more delicate hand.  I will know better next time.

I will likely show some clear, sand and clear again.  I may have to repeat the process several times.  Looks like I will need some more lacquer!!!!

Actually, I would think you'd want shorter flash times. If you got runs/sags, the material was staying at a lower viscosity for too long, was being over-applied, or both. With the larger orifice nozzle, I can imagine it being difficult to keep from getting too much material on the workpiece. So, if you used any retarder, cut back on it or eliminate it entirely so it flashes off and firms up faster. If not, cut back on thinner. Next time, I mean. You're done with the big nozzle now, right? Should be down to the 1.4mm or 1mm opening. I prefer the 1mm myself, but I'm using an HVLP spray rig.

I am finished with the big gum and will move to the 1.4 HVLP.  I have never used a retarder so that was not the issue.  I suspect it was just too much material too fast.  The good new too was the flake did not pool where the run was do it was simply a matter of sanding down the high spot

Unlike Kevin, I LOVE a good flake finish, and that one looks like its gonna be awesome! Can't wait to see the end result.

70 degrees and no humidity in Philly today.  I am starting to lay down some clear today.  I will have to spray today then sand before the final top coats.  Waterslide is on I am ready to go.

I laid down some clear.  I took some photos, one with a flash and one without.  I will let this dry for a few days and hit with some 400 grit and then do some final coats if it is smooth enough.

The flake is a ratio of 2:1 red to gold while the paint is roughly a 3:1 ratio red to gold.  I debated even adding the gold flake but it really adds some added dimension.  The gold flake really stands out on the red paint while the red flake stands out on the gold paint..right??? :laughing7: :icon_scratch: :laughing7: :icon_scratch:

I'm in the "not usually a fan of metal flake but this one is awesome" camp, looks great! Do you print your own decals or do you have them printed? I dig 'em.

I found a guy, Ronnie Taylor how make them for me.  He can do both black or a solid color.  And a black outline that is filled with gold or sliver, like the one you see.

Wow, that is really something!

DMRACO, was that originally a Warmoth build? I'd like to do a DC for my next project, but they don't seem to offer that body style. I thought I had heard they did at one time. Is it a bolt-on neck, and if so, how does it work on that, compared to the set neck of the Gibbys? Does it impede higher fret access like I think it would?

So many questions...  :)

Actually it is a Precision Les Paul kit, set neck.  IMHO if you are looking for a set neck LP clone, these are the best.  They carry a variety of models and have a decent custom shop too.  MayFly also has a Jr model from them.  The owners name is Phil and he is a great guy.
