Hey! How are folks dealing with band practice??

So I tried to organize a band practice over zoom.  Turns out that zoom has about a 1/4 second delay one way, adding up to about 1/2 second of latency round trip.  Result - we can't play together.

I did a bit of research, and apparently there is this thing called the LOLA Project that's designed for remote practice over the internet.  However - it requires custom hardware and a 1Ge  (One Gig E!!!!) link for it to work.  We just don't have that.

Down in the Mayfly lab I'm cooking up a solution, but before I present it to the world, I'm wondering what other people are using...

so.... what are you using?

Nah, just kidding, I haven't been in a band for years. Just me and my guitars. And some samplers, drum machines and stuff ...

Here's what I would do. Order Pizza. Get beer (I can't drink alcohol or even fizzy stuff any more but it seems to be part of band practice for many). Call each other on the phone. Argue about how songs are supposed to go. Don't worry about the delay, because you can probably spend half the call tuning your guitar or messing around with cool licks.

Sorry.  For real though I guess I would try to use the time to work on new songs individually.

We tried FB Messenger, Zoom, and What's App before giving up on that. I figured it wasn't going to work since bandwidth is an issue with everyone at home anyway. So, it's cutting into the cash-on-hand funds from the band's bank account a bit, but we found a big warehouse at a nearby nursery that wasn't being used and rented it for practices. Social Distancing? Check. Play at volume? Check. Killer natural reverb? Double Check!
