I agree that anyone looking to coil select both coils on a humbucker is only going to get a slight variation of sound, if any.(unless it's a P-rail like humbucker) A series/parallel is only going to be a little different, but it just might be the right kind of different, given the effect setting. Jimmy Page uses a pretty substantial wiring circuit, and I wouldn't consider him a newbie. The usefulness of a phase switch would depend greatly on the two pickups being used, and comes in handy for a quacky blues sound. Anyone new to guitar should consider keeping things simple or experiment to figure out what they like. I have to admit after 16 years of playing I am still not the guitar player I would like to be, and have tons of work to do. I like to be able to change the source quickly, instead of messing with effects if I am looking for a sound in particular. I do it for the fear of getting bored with my pickups and reaching some plateau in my playing growth. I personally don't care for active guitar circuits, but I don't make generalizations about the people that use them. There is no trick circuit to achieve what is done from hard work, but it's all about personal taste. As far as the handsfree pickup switch, I don't get it, because I have better control over my right hand than either foot.
