Pete, glad to finally see those guitars! I like the tele  :laughing7:

Thanx Max, I had that idea back before you were born. Someone I knew had seen Keef play a Tele like that, knew I had the old Tele pickup and the low powered Guild humbucker, and suggested I try that too. Plus, Andy Summers was ripping it up in The Police with a Tele modded similar to this at that time.Way before the Fat Teles etc.....We're talking 1983/84 or so (you know LAST century  :laughing7: )?

Swamp Ash body off the Showcase (it's as heavy as you'd expect Hard Ash to be but I think it's just a heavy Swamp Ash  :dontknow: ), Butterscotch Blonde, Maple neck, ebony fretboard, 24.75" conversion neck (vintage gloss), gold hardware, 250/500K concentric pots. .047 cap for Guild and .022 cap for Tele. Tele sounding a bit thin but that humbucker is jazz mellow mate!  :icon_thumright: Might have to tinker with the cap values for the Tele pickup  - it might be too ice-picky......and I might also have to replace one of those (expensive) concentrics at a later stage, there's a bit of scratchiness going on (I'm a  shite solderer).

Yes, your Strat..
there are 2 versions that are usually called Dan Smith Strats, the first (yours) which has a great reputation is is getting really collectible now, and the second, which was an attempt to save money (bad freeflyte type trem, input jack on the pickguard, etc)

so the good Dan Smith strats were the first "standard" strats that had the four bolts and the small headstock again(slightly off, since they lost the correct templates) but still had the big headstock decals.

I was going to copy and paste some more info, but somehow stratcollector.com is gone....

Wow, yeah?

I got that guitar for Aus$750 in 1986. I got it as it was a first attempt by Fender to do re-issues, this one being touted as  57 Reissue. I had thought for years it was one that was made off shore in Japan while the Fender factory was being upgraded under the then new management, but just renovating it last week I noticed it had the tag "Made in USA" on the headstock which confused me no end! :icon_scratch:

Thanx for the info... :icon_thumright:

LATE EDIT: OH shite! Markeaux, you are right man, this guitar is a 1982 Fender Stratocaster - standard model. It's the first series "Dan Smith"!!!!  I've just done some googling and checking of the serial numbers on Fender.

I bought it because the shop selling it were touting as a kind of 57 reissue attempt, before Fender came out with reissues. But the headstock serial number places it in 1982, and it is a standard serial number, so it IS the first series of Dan Smiths..... That news has made my day....  :blob7:  :blob7:  :blob7:

Cool!  Fairly old post, but new to me!  It's really cool to see the beautiful collections of the guys (and gals) I've been following for the past while.  So, I thought I'd share.

Here goes;  Left-to-right - Washburn Idol 66 Pro,  Ibanez Iceman,  Modified Squire Strat I built for a High School fundraiser . . .( it raised over $1300.00! ) :cool01:,  early 70's Gibson SG,  Prerequisite 70's Ovation Acoustic on floor,   First Act Garage Master (it came free with a Volkswagen my friend bought and she gave it to me . . . the guitar!),  Epiphone Sheraton II,  Modified Squire Strat HSS,  The Warmoth V, :headbang1:  Fender Standard Stratocaster (my workhorse), :guitarplayer2:  1963 Fender Jazzmaster (my first electric), :hello2:  Epiphone Prophecy Futura.

Brilliant!! I have a bit of a fetish for Stratocaster history.. and for some reason I really like early eighties strats! I have not owned, but played some that I liked so much better than any 70's strat. per example, the Dan Smith (1). the "the strat", Elite's, etc...

This is awesome. People who like guitars as much as I do. My wife saw me looking at this thread gave me a wierd look and said "are you looking at other peoples guitars", what was I suppose to say-I told her they were all mine.
Anyway these really are mine. Left to right Fender 220-ce (dao wood), Custom design warmoth, 98 Gibson Smartwood (Curupay), Heavily altered Squire (only the body still squire), Gibson Explorer, Warmoth P-Bass, Fender MB5

Sir, I'm afraid you are going to have to mail that Taylor and Warmoth Jazz to me.  :icon_biggrin:

And as long as you're breaking up the herd, that green Music Man needs to head for Santa Clara...

.....Back in the day when those Ibanezs were for sale as new instruments, a bassplaying friend of mine A/B'd one of these against a real Ricky and liked the Ibanez better!

In fact he went onto buy an Ibanez Eagle Bass as he felt more confident in the build quality of the Ibanez J-Bass styled bass guitar, than a real Fender Jazz bass... They were of some quality back then and really scared the pants off the Fenders and Gibsons (and Rickenb's) of this world.

That's probably why they had so many law suits against them, the big names were being made to look bad...... :dontknow:

Cheaper to fund a lawsuit than to overhaul an entire culture of "just good enough to get by".
