Guitar build #2- marbled California Claro Walnut

Sure, but they're not good shots, and I think front bezel was just dry-fitted because you shouldn't be able to see the beading on the left, as it was recessed. Also, you can't see the best feature, which was the dovetailed joinery.

The front is Zebrawood, the rear is Red Oak. There's another one that's all Red Oak, but with a Zebrawood front. They're both heavy little rascals, but they're just heads so it's not that big a deal.

Here's a rear shot of the oak version that shows up the dovetailing a little better...

Fine craftsmanship, Cagey!  :icon_thumright:

Ok, the blank arrived a few days ago. Looks really nice. Here is some Curly Maple porn.

Since the Maple billet was very thick, after resawing to the thickness of the body core, there was enough leftover wood for two lam top-sized pieces, which my luthier planed up nice and clean to a thickness of 27/32". (Totally awesome!) The short one, with the lesser figuring will be used for the control cavity cover. Here is the long one with the stronger figuring. Is anyone here interested in a Curly Maple lam top? I don't have any projects in mind, but it would be great as a 1/4"+ thick bookmatched set on a Strat-sized build.

Now the question is what to build? I was thinking about doing a guitar that exemplifies simplicity.
How about a double cut of some sort, with a Tele bridge and humbucker, with nothing else?
Specifically, this bridge (http://www.guitarfetish.com/Gold-Humbucker-Bridge-for-Tele_p_382.html) with one of the EMG humbuckers Mark is sending me from a trade deal, and a side jack. No pots or switches or anything else. (Maybe a trimmer pot in the battery cavity to vary output impedance, in case the pickup is too bright running straight to the jack.) As an added touch of class, black screws on everything, to accent the gold.

Any thoughts on such a setup? My primary concern is that it might turn out looking like a fucked up Tele, when I don't want it to look anything like a Fender. Marko insists I do a Hipshot hardtail and a humbucker with a gold mounting ring, but I like the simplicity of the Tele bridge. I'm just not sure about having a huge gold square on a guitar.

I like the idea. I think I'd still want a volume knob, though. Scartozi just stocked up on some brass - you might consider one of his bridges if you think the Tele bridge would be too much.

wow. that's some phenomenal walnut! i had a chance to build 2 solid walnut strats with a board I found. but the wood wasn't anything as nice as this! i found the walnut awesome to work with though.  you're in for a treat! i'll be watching this build for sure.

Flickr is giving me all sorts of trouble today, so I can't get pictures uploaded.
Here's one picture that made it. I'll get more up when they will upload.

Wow! That's super-sharp!

You're moving right along, there. You want thoughts and then an hour and a half later it's on a core burning off solvent! Keep it up and you'll be tuning it right about the same time Jay Leno comes on <grin>

awesome! I like the asymmetric butt! are the horns final or are you going to make the lower one shorter as you mentioned before?

I'll just say what others have ...... WOW  :toothy10:

Your the king of wood porn, thats for sure  :icon_thumright:

Here's a pic that wouldn't upload before.

More progress today. I got the neck pocket routed.

Unfortunately I ended up with some burns.

Shaping out the horns with a spindle sander. (Side note, I decided to dye the inside of the neck pocket black.)

And a nice clean pickup route. (Which will soon be dyed black.)

Going direct-to-wood mount on the humbucker, Joseph?  I see the dogears on your pup rout don't go the usual extra depth.
