If the tuners made any noticeable tonal difference, a locking nut would take them out of the equation. They could have a tonal impact if comparing the mass of tuners and their realtionship to the mass of the headstock and neck, but one brand being better or worse than another, meh. Consider the source. The brand making this claim does want to sell you theirs afterall. Sounds very Ed Roman to me.

Seriously, OP, are you talking about doing anything besides plucking normal sized strings with a pick of some kind (or even a coin)?
I have never heard of a tuner breaking because of too much chug....
too much twang, on the other hand, can crush a hard-hearted mug!

I have owned two sets of Schallers. One old set from W. Germany and a new set of Fender locking tuners. Both sets could probably survive a bomb blast and still work. I have a set of Grover mini locking tuners and they seem a bit cheaper quality to me. The Schallers seem a bit more solid. I honestly think the old W. Germany ones are the best tuners I've ever had on any guitar.

Break? Really? How? Not to be mean or anything, but the experience I've had with Metalcore players (Bullet For My Valentine imitators) is that they most of the time have no actual clue about what's going on with their guitars. They just whip it up on their shoulder and do shitee. I'm not saying your friend is like this, but I can't say I'm not suspicious.
The fact that tuners would break due to excessive playing sounds absurd to me. The only thing I can think of would be if you're using heavy gauged strings tuned high so that the tension would be absurdly high. This has nothing to do at all with chugging. Also, if you're using too thick strings you'll loose the chugga-chugga sound.

this is the music he plays... I respect them, and enjoy their live shows... he's a smart fellow... but he may just be listening to something someone told him... so I'm really not going to be critical of him.
I'm just happy to hear that my Schaller's will work fine. the Schaller hardware I've had a chance to see in person looked phenomenal.
