Grover's the only choice for aggressive metal, really? DURABILITY, NOT TONE...

I've been planning my build around schallers. but I was just told Grover's are the ONLY tuner you want if you "Like-ka to chugga"

are Schallers REALLY not up to it?

and if so... are anything Non-grover?

I don't see the tuners having any effect on your chug - when you have your dual rect cranked up, you can chug with a Tesco Del Rey  :guitarplayer2:

Says who?? And on what grounds do they say that?

I'd like to hear their argument.

But in answer to your question...  You could try, Schallers, Sperzel (James Hetfiled sig ESP), Gotoh (Kirk Hammet sig ESP),  Planet Waves.  There are plenty of tuners out there.....

Only Grover will make you go chugga... Schaller will make you sound like an 80s hairband.
Also watch out for planet waves.. they make you sound really funky!

Another Sesame Street thread? WOW.

Grover is OK  - but only Cookie Monster brings teh br00talz :headbang1:

That's why I have a Cookie Monster record. I love it.

If the tuners made any noticeable tonal difference, a locking nut would take them out of the equation.  They could have a tonal impact if comparing the mass of tuners and their realtionship to the mass of the headstock and neck, but one brand being better or worse than another, meh.  Consider the source.  The brand making this claim does want to sell you theirs afterall.  Sounds very Ed Roman to me.

Ah Crap...

...I'm a Moron...

I MEANT THAT I'M TOLD ALL OTHERS BREAK UNDER CONTINUED HEAVY PLAYING... THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT TONE...

which is odd, as like... half the threads I start... ask about tone.

the guy I asked is a long time friend and lead guitarist for a local Metalcore band. his guitars see a lot of play hours...

I wish I could add to the snark here but the level is so high!

Seriously, OP, are you talking about doing anything besides plucking normal sized strings with a pick of some kind (or even a coin)?

I have never heard of a tuner breaking because of too much chug....
too much twang, on the other hand, can crush a hard-hearted mug!

and if you steal my new song chorus I'm suing your arse.  :guitarplayer2: :guitarplayer2:

if you are serious about playing metal, than you probably have a floyd rose, and a locking nut.
In which case it hardly matters what kind of tuners you have!

I have owned two sets of Schallers. One old set from W. Germany and a new set of Fender locking tuners. Both sets could probably survive a bomb blast and still work.  I have a set of Grover mini locking tuners and they seem a bit cheaper quality to me. The Schallers seem a bit more solid. I honestly think the old W. Germany ones are the best tuners I've ever had on any guitar.

thank you. this is the response I was crossing my fingers for.

As for Me, despite my Metal leanings... my First guitar had a Floyd, and I Utterly despised it. my next guitar will definitely be a hardtail...

though the one after that... may be a lefty, mahogany, Humbucker'ed, Strat... and I may try a Wilkinson on that...

Break? Really? How? Not to be mean or anything, but the experience I've had with Metalcore players (Bullet For My Valentine imitators) is that they most of the time have no actual clue about what's going on with their guitars. They just whip it up on their shoulder and do shitee. I'm not saying your friend is like this, but I can't say I'm not suspicious.

The fact that tuners would break due to excessive playing sounds absurd to me. The only thing I can think of would be if you're using heavy gauged strings tuned high so that the tension would be absurdly high. This has nothing to do at all with chugging. Also, if you're using too thick strings you'll loose the chugga-chugga sound.

The amount of unadulterated horse puckey that gets bandied about regarding guitars is just staggering. Every time I think I've heard it all, somebody brings out a new one. This one is funnier than most, because the very idiots who'll trash an Asian guitar regardless of its pedigree or the reality of its build quality, usually without ever having played one, are now saying Grovers are the schnizz? Guess where Grovers are made? Begins with a "C"... no, not Canada... no, not Chile... China! THEY'RE MADE IN CHINA! Fabrique in Chine! Next to Klusons and a few no-name brands and "vintage" reissues, they're the crummiest machine heads made anywhere, which isn't saying much because there isn't much to any of them. Schallers, Sperzels and Gotohs are the premium brands. If anything is going to fall apart, they'll be the last to do so.

Some metal head probably tried jacking up the tour bus with their guitar and broke a peg, so now they're all crummy except for the Grovers on his mommy's guitar. They're just the best! <grin>

Man - you were sold a very large load of bullShite on that one!  Tuners breaking under heavy usage?  what nonsense!

and as others state, Grovers are cheaper in quality that the others - they are more likely to break under physical abuse.

this is the music he plays... I respect them, and enjoy their live shows... he's a smart fellow... but he may just be listening to something someone told him... so I'm really not going to be critical of him.

I'm just happy to hear that my Schaller's will work fine. the Schaller hardware I've had a chance to see in person looked phenomenal.
