Just received another new Warmoth neck yesterday. Decided to fit Gotoh SG38 tuners to this one, but despite pre-drilling the screw holes, one of the screws snapped when I was screwing it in and I didn't even apply that much pressure! :sad1: This happened before with a Gotoh string tree. Most annoying as I had to drill the darn thing out, fill the hole, and apply clear gloss which will take a week at least to harden. These tuners which I've used in the past are decent little units, so why do Gotoh supply them with cheap rubbish screws? I've ordered Stainless Steel replacements for when I do fit the tuners.

Ah, yes, the ol' "cheap-ass tuner screw snapped off in the hole" thread, Mark XXIX.
Many a time has this topic been discussed around here, and here's the capsule summary (stop me if you've heard this one before):
1. The hole need not be that snug - the point of this screw is not to secure the tuner to the headstock. The nut that screws onto the bushing does that. The purpose of the tuner screw is to prevent unwanted rotation. The hole should therefore be just smaller than the major diameter of the screw, and you need not torque the screw down until the veins in your forehead bulge. Stop when the screw wants to stop.
2. Always always ALWAYS wax the screws before trying to twist them into the wood. This will lubricate the screw's passage into the hole. The fancy folks use beeswax, some use paraffin wax, others crayon - but don't use soap, which is a base, and therefore might eventually do bad things to the wood and make the screw fall out.
