Kinda suprises me that they call these the "60s Tribute." I can understand partially due to the slimmer neck profile, and possibly due to the re-release in the late 60s. but when someone thinks 60s and Gibson, its usually the SG or the Firebird that sticks out.
I actually read that the reason so many of the Les Pauls re-released in the late 60s were goldtops was a way to clear out back inventory. In '56, Gibson had a slew of bodies routed and painted gold for production, when the humbucker was introduced. Since the bodies were already painted, they didn't want to re-route them for the bigger pickups, so they sat on them for nearly twelve years. When players asked to have the old Les Paul put back into production, they used up all these bodies and put in either P90s, or they fitted them with Epiphone mini-humbuckers, thus creating the Les Paul Deluxe. Joey Leone stated this in an article he wrote one time for myrareguitars.com.
Personally, I'd love to see them re-introduce the Deluxe with the 50s chunky neck profile. It would take that, or a chance to buy an SG Classic with the 50s neck at the right price (which I damn near did one time)
