Played one of these in honeyburst at a local Guitar Center about two weeks back, and it freakin' ROCKED.  Ran it through a Vox AC30.  :headbang:

At $899 (street), it wasn't even highway robbery of the usual Gibson kind, and the fit'n'finish were surprisingly good.

P90's are the shiznit, to be sure.

I do like those P90 Lesters.  Aside from all the negativity surrounding Gibson these days, those are actually really cool guitars.  My main guitar growing up was a 1960 Les Paul Junior from the time when Gibby didn't suck, so I have soft spot in my heart for any P90 Gibby.

What did you think of the neck?  It says slim profile, which worries me.  I like a bigger neck.  Though my old Junior had a neck similar to the PRS Wide Fat neck, not really fat, but definitely not slim.

That is a decent price for a Les Paul, assuming you try a bunch and get a good one.

I'd say the "slim taper" means "not a vintage fat profile," rather than "really super slim."  It was pretty comfy for me, but I'm also pretty adaptable on neck profiles -- apart from not being too crazy about the superslim wizard necks.

My long-time #1 is a 97 Les Paul Standard DC+ with the 60's slim taper neck. It's about the same overall thickness of the current Fender necks, but with a bit more rounded, shallow C-shaped profile instead of the almost flat feeling back of the Fenders. Would I prefer a '59 baseball bat? Yes. Does the 60's neck ruin it? Not at all.

I saw they were making SG versions of these two ($799 I think). I'd check the finish on the fretboard sides of these unbound Gibson necks very carefully.

So this is like a cheaper re-issue than the 1968 re-issue of the 1956 LP Standard? Is this the 3rd/4th/5th re-issue? I'm impressed!

yes...nice guitar....but check the neck.  Gibson is giving me the run-around on the "shrinkage" I am seeing one my guitar.  They blame it on the humidity.  Funny how only the Gibson did not like my humidity controlled cab!  All the other guitars (WARMOTH and Charvel had no issues.)

I think this is the LAST Gibson product I buy.

About time gibson joined the real world. All their "standard" models should be around 700-1000. good work! might consider getting one myself. Shamone.

Guess I should get around to finishing my Goldtop:

Yer dern tootin', jackthehack!  Let's see that baby finished up so's it can slay some gibby fiddles!

Nice to hear these new Studio Tributes are nice, I'm keen to grab one. Wanted a goldtop with P-90s for a long time, but sod paying CS prices. Spent the last couple of weeks drooling over these online, at £750 they seem to be the pretty much the best value Gibson over here now. Am I right in thinking they have a kind of masked binding effect?

Maybe it isn't finished because of that little ghost thingie?
:icon_thumright:

Nope; redid the Goldtop finish after screwing up scraping the binding - see http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=1375.0 - and then wound up with a gloss lacquer flaw (drip/run) in the topcoat that isn't visable in pictures but apparent in person; think I'll finish assembly as-is and call it a "prototype". Goldtop finishes with binding are not real easy to pull off...
