Fretless Guitar

I just recorded this improv on the fretless guitar to give you guys an idea of what it sounds like.

Please excuse the bad intonation, sloppy playing & poor note choice.  :sad1:

Sounds like the guitar version of how the adults speak in Peanuts cartoons... "waa WAA waa, waawaa WAA waa"

You got me thinking now. I think I will run my Q-tron envelope filter with it.

Do you have any clips with the tone control turned up?

No, but I can remix it with added treble & presence if you want. With too much high end, it sounds thin & clicky.

I just can't stand the sound of a tone control rolled down too far.  :blob7:
I would like to hear a more full-range sound, if possible, even if it gets too trebly.

Here it is with some treble mixed in. It does sound better, however, when you actually play with this type of sound, it's harder to play. I guess the trick is to play it with less treble & then add it in to the mix.

No, it's never a good idea to have to increase the amplitude of any frequency band if it's not absolutely necessary. You can take away what there is too much of, but you can't add what's not there. Also keep in mind that raising the gain also adds noise.

In any case, it's still sounding pretty warm. Let's hear the icepick-in-the-ear version!

How are you using your "fretting" hand?  On my fretless guitar I had to roll my fingers forward and 'fret' with my fingernails to get decent sustain.  Great for pseudo-indian glissandi and not much else.  :-\

I'm just playing it as I would a normal guitar.

What kind of fretless do you have & do you have any tips?

A Fernandes Fretless Retrorocket.  It's an import strat copy with sustainer electronics and a fretless rosewood fingerboard.  I really should expoy coat the fretboard or something.  The best fretless guitar I've ever played was a Vigier.  Those have metal fretboards- brass I think.  Sustained pretty well.

Flatwound strings help.  And using the fingernail instead of the pad, as I mentioned.  Amp gain...anything that would add sustain to a fretted guitar.

i bought it in my "world sounds" phase, and I could fake a sarod pretty well with it (tone-wise, not skill-wise).

To me, it sounds too clicky & high endy. I'm trying to emulate a fretless bass, Alain Caron's fretless bass to be exact.

Also, the more high end, the less sustain & playing & phrasing becomes way too hard.
