Floyd Rose Tremolo: Why?

I am turning an old Squier bullet into a respectable guitar and was wondering, is there really something amazing about a (Schaller or Original) Floyd Rose Tremolo Bridge? I am quite willing to spend the extra cash if it is actually going to show a major difference.

Thanks Guys

As opposed to what per se?

Are you wondering what's the difference between an original and say an aftermarket one? Or you just asking what reason would there be to add one to your project.... :dontknow:

Sorry, I should have been more specific: Why should I add one to my project when I could stick to the free, albeit mediocre, stock tremolo? `

I guess really would be down to a matter of taste. Do you like floyd's, don't you like floyd's?  Do you like floyd's more or less than a standard bridge..

I prefer the floyd, but that's me and my taste. I've always prefered the floyd over a standard bridge. 1 fror the looks(just looks cooler) and 2 I like the fine tuner function... :party07:

A Floyd has much better tuning stability.  When you use a Squier tremolo heavily you'll knock your guitar out of tune very quickly.... using a double-locking trem like a Floyd will prevent that from happening.

It all depends what kind of music you play... if you play blues/country, you'll only be using the trem subtly.  If you want to shred like EVH, you need a Floyd so you can slam/yank on the whammy bar and get a big bend!

The downside of the Floyd is it's expensive and it's more difficult to restring and retune.  Plus it's got a lot of moving parts... go to a store with used guitars and I'm sure you'll see some old Jacksons missing bits and pieces off their trems.

That sounds like its worth the money, would something like a Gotoh Wilkinson be a nice medium? Fewer moving parts, Easy to tune and restring, better tuning stability than a Squier tremolo, and less expensive than a FR? I don't actually know too much about Gotoh; they may not be worth much.

I'd say the Gotoh is probably the middle of the road between the floyd and a stock trem. But I don't and never have owned one so I can't say for certain...But there are plenty of guys on the board to ask who have them... :icon_biggrin:

I don't own a Wilkinson, but there's another thread or two floating around about some of the downsides.

I also don't own a wilkinson but a lot of people I've spoken to on and off the board LOVE them.

Hey Nat, you back in the US yet? Or still in the Scotish highlands playing with sheep...... :toothy12:

Apparently, Gotoh also makes a licened Floyd Rose style trem.  It is now used on Suhr guitars in place of the OFR because of apparent quality control issues with the newer OFRs.

I haven't tried one of these Gotohs, however.

Don't bother . . . sell the guitar and spend the proceeds on a new Floyd Rose and put THAT on another axe !
