Hi,

I'm in the final steps of finishing my body and am using this tutorial as a guide.
http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/TruOil.htm
... but I'm missing some information.

After the tru-oil is applied and then smoothed with 0000 steel wool, ( in between coats of tru-oil ) there's going to be some dust from the smoothing.

How do I clean up inbetween coats of tru-oil in preparation for the next coat?

Thanks!

I've done exactly what you are doing, and i gotta say, I'm not a big fan of 0000 steel wool, it falls apart into small pieces that are hard to clean up.

I say just use a lint free cloth to apply, then prior to your next coat, just wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth, and inspect it under a good light for particles, I would save the steel wool until your done, and the finnish is dry, then use the steel wool just to knock down high spots and to give it a sorta buffing.

Those little bits of steel wool are hard to see and hard to clean up, My vote is avoid it till the very end

I've come to prefer the 3M gray scrapy pads to "real" steel wool. Or even the green ones - you get them in the grocery store, for cleaning dishes. I still use steel wool on metal, but it does leave particles. I'm pretty sure the Tru-Oil bottle doesn't even recommend any sanding between coats, if you make each individual pass with the oil ultra-thin, there's no reason to sand or level anything.

I always use a microfiber cloth and canned air (the keyboard cleaner ones) before I slap on the next coat.

I am into my 5th coat of tru oil on my new baritone body,
up until yesterday i was using steel wool then vac with a soft head brush and run a magnet over it
dirty work too much mess. Yesterday i swapped to these, they work a treat no mess, and reusable.

Thanks everyone.

I'm sending my real steel wool to the basement to be used only for ......... whatever.

Marko ... good idea on the microfiber cloth and the compressed air. I've already got the cans of air.

Stubhead ... I just ordered some Scotch-brite gray ( 0000 ) and also a pack of white.

TonyW ... that synthetic looks cool. 3M also has a similar product.

Thanks again. I'd be lost without your advice.
