the song was just fine it was his constant use of the two hipshot detuners that got me bothered.

Well, i guess you definitely don't like Michael Manring then.
MM has detuners on all 4 strings, and on one of his songs, he changes tuning over a hundred times. (I can't remember which song it was though)
He has a detunable bridge as well.

Well, I guess if it's his technique and not just something he does on one or two songs to look cool. I remember seeing a youtube video of a guy using something like 7-8 capos on an acoustic guitar and moving them around while he was playing and I thought the same thing. it just looked like the guy thought to himself "I shoud make a song that uses 8 capos....

MM's whole "thing" is that he changes his tuning constantly.

Take a look at his signature bass:

Iv never seen Manring play before but from that clip he looks like a pretentious  ass that needs to go home and work on his bass playing affectations.

Brian

Actually based on the video interview I watched of him, he seems like a very down to earth, humorous fellow, who wasn't shy about sharing his "secrets."  I figured that song wouldn't be for everybody, but I'm a sucker for that ambient drony stuff...

I've met Michael a few times and he is a very down to earth guy.  Very generous with his time and attention.  Monster player if you get beyond his solo work.

Is that Don Ross in the video with him? That guy's awesome

Definitely Don Ross in there! I met him at a house party concert in Connecticut two autumns ago, very cool guy. He does his one thing really well.

Also, I really like Manring's bass tone there. I know so little about bass, and have no idea how he gets that tone. But if i went nuts on bass, I would want a tone like that.

Speaking of favorite bassists,
the Yes concert in Dallas (and the rest of the tour) got cancelled this week as Chris Squire got rushed to the hospital with a blood cloth.

I am really freaked out about this, hope he will be fine!!
