Has anyone tried the EMG X series PUs, especially the 85X. These active PUs are supposedly more open organic sounding versions of their PUs & yet still retain the clarity & bottom end tightness that EMGs are famous for.

Just snagged an 81x and 85x cheap, will probably be dropping them in my LP baritone as soon as Warmoth gets the neck to me. Will update then.

In the meantime I've heard someone with an 85x in the bridge (in a mahogany Agile baritone deal) and it sounded fantastic. A lot warmer than regular EMGs and took up a ton of space, and cleaned up very well.

They're supposedly EMG's answer to Seymour Duncan's Blackouts.

I have my 81x and 85x in hand - stole them off a guy on ebay for $85 each shipped. I was almost sure it was too good to be true but all is well. Can't do anything with them yet but they're here.

The consensus I'm getting is that they're in the middle ground between regular EMGs and the Duncans. I can't say for sure without A/B'ing them, but based on the 85x I heard I'd say that they were venturing more into Blackout territory with a little more cut. I'm considering trying a 60x and 85x set for a Epi LPC if the 81x doesn't blow my mind in this one. My initial impression was that the 85x was far better than the regular EMG 81 as far as bridge pickups go, but with all the other variables going on that doesn't mean all that much.

There are all kinds of youtube reviews on these ones... It sounds to me like they want to make a pickup with the range of an active pickup and the feel of a passive...
