Yeah, I'm not that much of a purist. If something will make an improvement I'm all for it. And hey, if the sound of the guitar goes to crap after putting those tubes in I can always take them right back out and use them to shove into my urethra.

Duuuuude, that would frickin' hurt!!! Making me cringe just thinking about it. Sorry!

I live to tell that's a special kinda hell. Once a cath is in, you don't notice it, but getting it there ain't no fun at all. You almost gotta feel sorry for the nurses who run them because there just isn't any way to cooperate with them no matter how stoic and self-controlled you are.

Of course when I was growing up, the hum of the amp & crackling of the coily cord was the only way you were sure they were working.
When we broke a guitar string we used to have to whittle down some baling wire, sumtime all we had was bobwire, dammit whar's my club. :party07:

That's my thought as well.

I did the toilet paper thing on my old Ibanez, but on my Strat, I leave the springs free to resonate. That's part of the vibe.

After reading this I had to see for myself. So I went around tapping on my guitars, and what do you know? Strats do echo. I'm going to leave it alone and say that it's a natural reverb tank.  :laughing7:

Went to the store tonight and looked all over for that damn tubing and guess where I found it.....that's right, the last place you'd think to look for it, in the pet section. I bought air line tubing for a fish tank. Perfect size and it came in a 2 meter roll. Got my white Warmoth and my Clapton strat taken care of. I have to say, I honestly believe it makes a difference and I like what I'm hearing. It seems to have solidified the sound. Very happy that I did this.

Maybe you could use the foam that comes in the bottom of a pickup box? It must at least look better than toilet paper.

btw, apparently Steve Vai does the toilet paper/tissues/whatever thing too.

The elusive tissue stuffing that replaces Evo's back plate, cuting down the noise of the springs and the vibrations in the back cavity that inevitably flow through the body that is picked up through the pickups.

His way is obviously pretty unsightly though.

What I do is fold up a bunch of sheets and then cut them into a neat little pad with the scissors.
You can put the pad between the body and springs.
Good God, that almost looks like a soiled diaper.

that's how i always looked at it. im surprised anyone needed to see that video to notice the echo, i always noticed it but never thought it was a bad thing.

If you ever get a chance to check out Stevie Ray Vaughans concert video (Live in El Mocambo) you can actually hear the springs reverb through the guitar like a reverb tank, he pounds the guitar with his fist and bangs it on the floor and uses it to get some great natural effects and feedback; probably one of the most amazing videos of the strat being completely exploited  for all its worth ever recorded, especially when you consider the minimal use of outside effects.
Im sure after that video came out guys all over were pounding and beating their strats to hear them springs shake and rattle. Its also a great testament to the endurance of the strat, no doubt if you were to do what Stevie did to his strat to  a jackson or a gibson the show would have been over much sooner.

That was the first video I ever saw of SRV way back when. I had heard his CD's and wasn't overly impressed but when I saw El Mocambo I was converted. When he beats the crap out of his guitar during Third Stone From the Sun I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. That's a what, 59 body with a 63 neck?  A classic vintage guitar beat to a pulp. He rode that mother hard too. All hail the mighty Strat!!

I don't think it's an issue at all when playing clean, but when using an overdriven amplifier, that so-called "reverb" is extremely annoying and uncontrollable. The tubing is a great idea; much better than stuffing tissue paper back there. I can't believe Vai does that, with all the technology he has access to.

To me, it looked like a stash secreted away in the guitar trem cavity.....  :cool01:  (I worked at Sydney Airport for too long  :confused4: )
