Found some nice stuff on ebay. 4 billets of purpleheart. 36'' x 4'' x 3/8 '' (WHY the inch-size? the metric system is much easier to read... darned). and same measurements for bubinga (perhaps a tad thicker or thinner). all for 40 euro's, including shipment!
why? I'll make some backplates out of them. 4'' is just wide enough for the cavity covers for a les paul and also for a tremcover! I'll have to recess them in the body, the wood has to remain this thick otherwise the chances of splitting and/or cracking increases too much. I'll attach them on a piece of metal (1mm thick, made out of a sidepanel of an old computer, haha). its steel, so magnets will stick to it. which brings me to my 'piece de resistance'.
I'll attach the plates with magnets, not screws. I'll cut a small recess in a corner of the cavity (so there's no support of the plate right there) and I can press on the plate there, and it will pop up. I'll have to find out how much magnets I will have to use for it to stick, but not so much that the plates might crack under the pressure of pressing them out.
I'm still contemplating which pickups I'll be using. Perhaps (most likely) I'll drop Jon Moore (tonefordays.com) an email with an order sheet.
