Yet another from the coolest of the cool:

What is Hip?  by Tower of Power

:rock-on:

tangent: The weird link between Tower of Power and steriod-using athletes. Yup, it's a bass player.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Conte

Yes, I heard about that.  Probably got his start in the "Substance Distribution Business" during his ToP days. You know just to "help make ends meet".  Actually,  Francis "Rocco" Prestia was the ToP bassist playing those red hot kicks on What is Hip?

Prestia is the shizzle, indeed.

It's just weird how ToP and/or Victor Conte popped up in three different e-conversations for me this week.

Ole Conte isn't the only ToP alumnus in hot water with the law.  Former lead singer Rick Stevens is currently serving a life sentence for triple homicide.

Not sure if anyone posted this yet or not, but...

"What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians

Listen to it, you'll see

led zeppelin- black dog  :party07:

always thought it was a killer guitar lick (who doesn't?), and then read in a zep special in some guitar mag that john paul jones wrote the riff on bass. he was a pretty killer bassist in fact. he can be in my band. and i wouldn't have to worry about the age difference either, he'd probably just hang in the shadows the whole time, just like in zeppelin  :binkybaby:

stormbringer -- AGREE on "Siberian Khatru".

Damn right.  You know he produced R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People, long one of my favorite albums?

Back on topic... Rage Against the Machine, "Take the Power Back".  That song is why you don't mess with Tim C!

You're right, we've totally neglected Geddy Lee on this thread.  For serious GL licks I recommend:

YYZ from Moving Pictures
La Villa Strangiato from Hemispheres  :glasses10:

Check out the Bass Solo in 5:15!

Why didn't they hire a real guitarist instead of Pete's Brother :(

Flea doesn't get any love?

I love the bass on Sir Psycho Sexy... sounds like he's using a ya pedal or some weird shit like that.  And on Funky Monks he proves that using more than one note in your bassline is excessive.  :headbang:

Flea is a great bass player, although I never really cared for the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a whole. The only song of theirs that I like is their rendition of Steveie Wonder's Higher Ground. Great bass guitar work there!  :headbang:

John Paul Jones wrote the book on hard rock bass guitar. :glasses10:  This months issue of Bass Player features JPJ as the cover story. Bass tab for Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, and one other song are included.  My personal fave: Good Times, Bad Times. :rock-on:
