CNC'd Telecaster

Who needs a control cavity anyway? Controls are highly overrated :laughing7:

Lookin' good!

I routed it. I also re-routed the control cavities as they were oddly off. No idea.

Blue liquid dye on top. Black aniline powder on the sides and back. The stuff on top soaked into everything. The stuff on the sides didn't. Both were dissolved into alcohol so it must be the type of dye.

It is now like 25F outside so I think I'm going to brush on shellac sealer and leave it until spring.

It's unusual for dye to not soak into the sides. Must be something on the wood. It's been postulated that the original reason for "burst" type finishes was because the end grain is so absorbent, it's almost impossible to dye a body without the edges being overly dark, so they started darkening them on purpose to have some control over presentation.

Since that's Ash, I'm not surprised it weighs 500 lbs. Also, Tele bodies are normally 1 3/4" thick, so you've got a little extra junk in the trunk there.

Next time, you might want to use grain filler to level the body out, then seal that before you dye it. It'll be a lot smoother and less splotchy.

Still, that should come out real pretty. I like the shade of blue, and graduating to black is a nice touch.

Blue with the black burstover is a good look. It'll be really nice with a clear coat on it.

I mixed up some way dark indigo and that did the trick.

Just the seal coat alone brings out the color. Will wipe on poly this to finish it.

Finishing bodies is a labor of love sometimes...
True, and so exhausting sometimes also..

I'm on to the poly. I've two more coats and I expect it to be ready for final sand. Just top and sides. God knows how many the back will need.

I might go with this neck, instead....
