Hi everyone - long time no post.... must be over three years now since I started my build?

Well, I got to the stage I'm at now, got a bit fed up, put it to one side, life got in the way and I've only just now got the enthusiasm to finish it.

Here we are as it stands today...

The reason I got fed up was that I'd set my heart on having frameless pick-ups like on a EVH Wolfgag etc, but being a first time builder (assembler) I didn't realise that having an angled neck pocket would result in the naked pickups having to stick up too high to be mounted either in a stable fashion or one that looks nice, so I threw my teddies out of the pram, put the guitar away and left it... until today where I remembered it and thought, oh well, how am I going to correct it?

The answer?

Mount the pick-ups in a frame and accept the compromise - if it is indeed a compromise?

I remember at the time one or two of you thought it would look better with them mounted in frames, so I'm hoping that is still the case? Having seen it again for the first time in a long time, it suddenly looked unfinished and is crying out for pickup frames. Anyone else agree?

Other than that, it just needs the truss rod cover mounting - I had both the cover and neck plate made and engraved by DangerousR6, but being brass they have tarnished over time so I'll get them gold plated to match the rest of the hardware.

Here is my question... would you put gold p/u frames on to match the pickups and other hardware, or cream to match the binding and toggle switch?

Are all pick up frames the same dimensions and will they all fit the DiMarzio Norton and Air Norton I have fitted?

Does anyone know of any gold plated metal pick up frames or are they all plastic?

Do I have to use Di Marzio frames?

Last question.. is it normal to have the neck screw heads sit at an angle to the mounting plate due to the angled relief cut on the back of the neck mount area on the body? The screws are naturally perpendicular to the neck and the angled neck pocket makes the screw heads sit at a slight angle to the rear face of the body relief mod. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

Frames are definitely the way to go, and IMHO, they should be black; nicely frames the pickups visually, matches the outer edge of the burst, doesn't go overboard with the bling factor-the figuring
in that top is so incredible already, I think there'd just be too much going on if the frames were gold or even creme. What a stunning guitar y'got there! Three years?!? Enjoy it!

Black?

Interesting... I guess it would work with the black nut and dark edges and unbound neck?

I'm glad you like it. :)

Anyone else - I'm keen to gather opinion as I'm useless at this sort of stuff - it took me long enough to chose what I have so far!

Ok, black sounds good.

I'm tempted to go with the metal ones like here http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/All_Hardware_and_Parts_by_Instrument/Electric_Guitar_Parts/Electric_Guitar_Covers_and_Plates/Metal_Humbucker_Mounting_Rings_For_Flat_Bodies.html as I try and avoid plastic where possible.

Any other sources or recommendations for quality tapered mounting rings?

I don't know......I think any of the three choices would look just fine on there.  I would almost lean towards a cream color if it was a good color match to the binding.  Also I have recently made a couple of thin (rose)wood truss rod covers that look like the fretboard just extends past the nut and ends in an arched or bullet shape.  Just used some headstock veneer 1/16" thick wood of the interweb.  Mucho Bueno!  (Having owned a couple of fancy Gibson's) it is easy to overdo the bling, and I find myself appreciating a less complicated look!

I remember that one. Lovely piece. I'm surprised you let it languish. I agree with the others - black mounting rings, metal. Everybody sells them, and I haven't seen a quality difference from anyone. The StewMac parts will certainly work, but you can get them locally at Thomann.

with that bridge and an angles pocked you will need the angled frames.  They are thinner in the front and thicker in the back.  Also the neck pickup is thinner all around than the bridge.

you can go with staggered like these

since you have an arch top you could consider this, but I do not think they are needed because the VIP contours are not that severe.  Please have someone with a VIP comment.

BTW...GOLD would look nice too!!!

That would be your natural instinct, but it would be wrong. VIPs, Soloists, and other Warmoth carved top bodies are essentially flat at the peak. You could even put traditional Tele bridges on them if you wanted to. So, mounting rings with slanted bases would look strange as well as put the pickups at the wrong orientation.

that what i thought

The body top is indeed totally flat where the pickup and bridge are.

Also, the angled neck pocket means I need tapered mounting frames, but not a tapered as a Les Paul - approx 1mm difference from the front of the pickup to the rear - I had the digital veneer on it last night getting precise measurements.

+1 here too on angled black rings. Should sit back enough visually, to highlight those beautiful gold bobbins. Classy look you have working there.  :icon_thumright:
