Candy Tangerine Jazzmaster

OK, my first project.  I saw the Candy Tangerine Jazzmaster and had to have it.  I've wanted a Jazzmaster for some time and was ready to pull the trigger but Fender decided to hike their prices so I'm protesting by going the Warmoth route.  Besides, Warmoth has a much, much, much better color selection.  White, Black and three tone... come on Fender, wake up.

I like maple necks, (the one and unfortunately only thing Eric Clapton and I have in common), and saw somewhere that the prototype Jazzmaster's had maple necks.  This was my opportunity to get the 59 Fat back flamed maple neck and build a Jazzmaster the way Leo originally envisioned it.

I ordered the Curtis Novak JM-180 two zone wiring on gold anodized pick guard from Rothstein - www.guitar-mod.com.  Why solder if you don't have to and I'll get the tone I'm after.  It is about tone right but the color is killer.

I love surf music, hey somebody has to, and was thinking about one of those tacky pin-up girl water slide decals but this color is to cool to cover up.  I went with the engraved neck-plate from FSR instead, classy-er but still retro.  http://www.fsrshop.com/0030.html

I received the body and it is gorgeous.  Did I mention I love this color?  I would love to paint a car like this if I had a car worthy of it.  See Mustang / new dream car Pic.

A few questions for those Jazzmaster builders.  I purchased the pickup cavity shields for an American JM but they are way bigger than cavities that Warmoth routed out.  Has that been a problem for anyone.  I don't have the wired assembly yet so am I going to be in for a surprise?  Also, I had to pound and bend the control tray to get it in the cavity, had to get all Chip Foose on the thing.

Looking forward to the neck arriving some time in April or May...

That JM should be a real looker  :glasses9:  I have always loved that color...
Not sure about the loaded pick guard?  Did you ask Warmoth if a standard Fender JM pickguard fits a Warmoth JM?
Not all Warmoths will fit a standard Fender/Gibson pickguard.  I am sure you can make it work.
Good luck, welcome to the forum, and let's be posting more pics as she progresses.
:rock-on:

I asked Jason about this when I was ordering the neck.  He said it wouldn't be a problem but wasn't too convincing. :-\

Wish it was my car.  I did a google search for Candy Tangerine and came up with this if anybody is interested.  I don't think it's for sale

I think I'm going to need a matching Jaguar.  I have a AVRI but the nut width is really small.  Love the guitar anyway.  Maybe a Jag with 2 or 3 P-90's.  Will Warmoth route a Jag for a non-statndard Jag pickup set?

Doing some Photoshoping I came up with this for the Jazzmaster.

Sweet!
I was looking at that in the showcase, I think I could fall in love with candy tangerine pretty easily.

What's the normal wait for a neck?

I ordered a flamed maple w/ flamed maple fingerboard (I picked the wood option), 59 round back, abalone dots, 1 3/4" width, GraphTeck white TUSQ nut.  The sales guy said it would be ready in 8 to 10, I said days, he said weeks.

I've been looking at the same four Jazzmaster necks on the site for weeks.  Next project, I'll remember to order the neck first.

If they're making it just for you, that sounds about right. Showcase items are the way to go if you need it quickly.

That seems about right.  Remember, this thing didn't exist until you ordered it.  I don't know if you got a Warmoth finish on it, but Maple being a non-exotic requiring a finish, has the normal production time plus sealing time, plus curing time for the finish.

Candy Tangerine Jaguar - Photoshop Concept sketch.  What do you think?  Now if Warmoth would just put one in the stock body pile.

Actually it would be nice if you could select the type of guitar you want to build, find the neck, body, bridge, etc. and have the site tally the cost for all the parts and pieces and show you an image when you are done.  I've been doing this with spreadsheets and photoshop and it's very time consuming.  It would be really cool if you could hear what it would sound like through various amps based on type of wood, pickups, bridge.  Maybe a holograph 3D image would be cool... hey webmaster.

Been brought up tons of times. Goes against licencing agreements. Since they sell replacement parts, the official goal is not to build a complete guitar, which is how they are licensed by fender.

and still they advertise "get yout axe together" where various replacement parts fly in one build :)

btw, I like the new ad "think outside the rack"  (I think it was something like that) but it does stand for what I think Warmoth is all about ;)

Bingo.  Fender thinks you are buying a neck to go on your Fender body, or body to go with your Fender neck.  Their license, their rules.

More parts arrived.

Received the pickguard and pickups from Rothstein http://www.guitar-mod.com/.  I ordered the Curtis Novak JM-180  with the dual P90 setup in the bridge, can't wait to hear it.  http://www.curtisnovak.com/pickups/jm-180.shtml.  I am very impressed with the quality and looks of the assembly, I think the gold anodized looks killer on the Candy Tangerine.  BTW, Rothstein had the assembly in the mail one week ahead of schedule - thanks.

OK, the issues.

Doing a quick fit into the the body I noticed that the pickup holes are not aligning (see pics).  Warmoth Jazzmaster routes are barley large enough for the pickups and covers.  Because the pick up holes in the pickguard do not line up with the Warmoth routes, it looks like I'm going to have to do some cutting, exactly what I didn't want to do.  Rothstein stated that they use Warmoth pickguard in their assemblies so I didn't think this would be a problem; however, I don't know if the gold anodized pickguards are from Warmoth.

Hey Watershed, can you widen some pickup cavities for me?

Warmoth does not do gold anodized pickguards. If you ever hang around offsetguitars.com, you'd see this is a known problem. Later today, I'll check and see what pickguards will work  :icon_thumright:

Hey, good morning Max,

I am pretty determined to make the anodized pickguard work.  It won't matter if I make the cavities a little wider since all of that is hidden.  I just don't want to screw up the body with a run-a-way router
I'll check out OffsetGuitars.com

Thanks for your help
