can you stain wood without removing the finish?

I have a maple guitar neck that has a satin nitro finish on it and I'd like to stain it a darker color to match the body that I have. Is it possible to do this without ruining the finish or do I have to redo it after I stain it?
 
:icon_scratch: Stain is exactly what the term suggests. Wood is porous, and whole idea is that the stain has to be absorbed into the raw wood. Their is no way to stain wood if it has a hard sealed finish on it.
