Can anyone get me a NAMM pass? I'll make it worth your while.

Oh and I will be the guy wearing a pink button down shirt or something that clearly states my country of origin (Netherlands!), now we're all proclaiming our fashion statements...

There are approximately 8 trillion people at NAMM every year, or so it seems.  If they opened it to the public, there would be 8 hundred trillion.  I'd wager it is bigger that Comic-Con, and Comic-Con is notorious for being busier and more treacherous than the Battle of Helm's Deep crowd-wise.  I hate having to track down badges to get in, but I'm glad that it's not open to the public just for crowd reasons.

I personally think they should have a whole separate NAMM for the public where you can buy stuff from all the booths.  That would be amazing.

I'd hope part of the prestige of it is it's not a guitar show with vendor booths.  It's a way for the industry to showcase new stuff and prototypes, demo the stuff with clinics, etc.  Eric being there with another vendor, you don't have to speculate real hard who it is, they're probably not looking to sell units on the floor that day, rather get people to see the differences and request that product on a custom build or have a manufacturer pick it up as an option.  I think it's more like a car show in that sense. You don't walk out of a car show with a car you just bought there.  You go to a dealer, or maybe a manufacturer will now offer their model with _____ tires or stereo now.

It's to generate interest that turn into future sells.  Isn't it?

And why not capitalize on that interest with immediate sales? There is a lot of selling going on at NAMM anyway.

The NAMM shows are very much a B2B event.  A tremendous amount of annual sales is done the first day of the show. (Thursday)  Don't expect to get much attention unless you're a buyer/purchasing agent and have an appointment on that day.

The clinics/shows/artist appearances are to push product.  There are also regular sales/marketing clinics throughout the show for retailers.  It's all about business.

I worked a booth several years ago for another manufacturer (Bee Basses) and dealing with the 'guests' was a royal pain.  The vast majority of product damage is caused by the cavalier attitude of many of them.  NAMM isn't supposed to be Guitar Center on a Saturday afternoon.....

With that said, I would be open for a different venue where you could get public feedback and/or product testing.  I would prefer to do that *before* massive public unveilings though.

At a public show I'd mainly want to be able to buy smaller things from the little companies that aren't carried at most shops because it's kind of annoying to go and find something you really like right there and then be like "Okay, I guess I'll go home and order one online" even though there it is right in front of you.  Plus then you have to pay shipping.

If it's a small gadget or gizmo, shipping shouldn't be a problem, and many places do free shipping, or could even offer a "if you saw us at NAMM" coupon code.  If it's already an event pushed for space, 1000+ vendors bringing 1000+ pieces of inventory doesn't make sense.

I wasn't thinking bringing extra inventory really, just like on the last day selling off all the displayed stuff might be cool.

I don't want them to change the way they run it, except for letting in the hobbyist - me.  Even at guitar shows, I don't plug stuff in or play it.  I ooh and ahh at all the pretty things.

It's funny, I took my wife to the Dallas guitar show last year.  I thought she'd be bored and want to leave.  She had a blast!  The things she was into was not what o was into.  I was looking at all the factory or custom one offs.  She was into all the crap brands that had pretty colors or cool straps.  I'm looking a boutique amps and pickups, she's looking at ukuleles with sparkle finished.  I'm drooling over Dusenbergs, she's pointing out bedazzled guitar straps.

Well the nice thing about NAMM is that a lot of the vendors set up nice noise-cancelling headphones with all their rigs.  Because let's face it, unless you're cranking something up to 11, you can't hear for crap in those big halls, especially if you're near drum land.  I could hardly even hear what I was playing half the time, let alone listen to subtle nuances in the gear.  Boss/Roland has this huge booth that looks like a giant guitar pedal, and when you go in, they have stations set up each with a guitar (I think they had several different guitars, which was nice), headphones, and every pedal they make hooked up  to it so you can test anything out you want in any combination you want.  It was a LOT of fun.  There were many pedal booths like that, but the Boss one was organized the best.

Trying out acoustic guitars is pretty futile though.  Very hard to even hear what you're playing.

I will be there as a guest of Slash and Seymour Duncan......(I wish) - lol

Seriously though, I will be most likely wearing a TV TEST t-shirt not unlike one worn by Sheldon Cooper in TBBT and will be checking out Fender, Roland/Boss, Fulltone, and Wampler...or at least those are the definite ones so if you see me there come over and say hello.

I am also hiring a car and will be going to visit the Fender Factory and Custom Shop. I have plenty space so if anyone wants to come along please let me know in a PM and we can meet up. I will be in Anaheim from 22nd to 29th, so will also be driving as far down to San Diego for the day (may as well make the best of the week).

I'm in San Diego, so if you're down this way let me know. I can point you in the direction of some good micro brews, etc while here. Always glad to help out with suggestions for stuff to see/do as well.

I've never been on that Fender tour even though I'm like 15 mins away from Corona.  What day are you doing that?

MikeW - It will be the day before or the day after the show ends. Please do recommend any cool places to eat and drink as well as stuff to do (whatever can be fitted into a day). Also feel free to come along. Its always a good experience to meet people with the same interests.

Hannaugh - I will be probably going on the Sunday or Monday. I can PM you the exact details closer to the time. Again if you or Orpheo want to come along, I am more than happy to take people with. I am hiring a fairly large car and have lots of space to spare.

I would recommend you check out the Fender Visitor Centre for information, tickets etc. http://www.fender.com/en-GB/visitor-center/
Tickets, as it stands, are just $10 and I think its worth the experience.

thanks

PM sent. Let me know what days/times you'll be down this way.

Ah I'll probably still be walking around the show on Sunday and I work Monday.  I seriously live less than 15 mins away from Corona though, so I might go earlier next week since I have the whole week off from work (kids have their finals week, which means no conservatory teachers on campus.  Woohoo!).

If anyone is interested in good places to eat or just take a break from the NAMM insanity for a while around the Convention Center, here are some good ones I know of:

- Oggi's Pizza & Brewing on Chapman & Harbor (5 min drive from the Anaheim Convention Center).  Good food, great beer.  It's also right next to Joe's Crab Shack, Red Robin, and Outback Steakhouse, so if you're in the mood for any of those, you'll know where to go.
- Disney's Grand Californian Hotel Storyteller Cafe has excellent food.  I've never been disappointed.  It's a beautiful hotel and a beautiful restaurant as well.
- Mama Cozza's is about 10 mins away and has really good Italian food.  It's the unofficial restaurant of Disneyland employees.
- Downtown Disney is an outdoor mall within 15 mins walking distance from the Convention Center.  They have a ton of restaurants, my two favorites being Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen and House of Blues (HOB has really good burgers and a full bar).
- Garden Walk is also a 15 to 20 minute walk or 2 minute drive.  It's another nice semi-outdoor upscale mall with a bunch of bars and restaurants.
- And most importantly, the nearest In-N-Out Burger is at Brookhurst and Orange, about a 10 minute drive.

If anyone is going to Fullerton to check out the Fender museum that's there (it's pretty small, but it's still cool) or to take your picture under the Fender Ave. sign or something, let me know.  I lived in Fullerton my whole life up until a few months ago, and I can recommend places there to eat or hang out as well.  It borders on Anaheim, so it ain't far away.

Kind of a bummer, I was just looking at the exhibitors list... no Fulltone, Catalinbread, Roger Mayer, or Jacques.  I didn't see a listing for Breedlove or Larrivee either, which is kind of odd.
