I just received my body for my new cabronita build. I was completely thrilled until I noticed a ding. I got this from the screaming deals section but it didnt say anything about the body being a second or anything. I contacted customer service and I am waiting for a reply. How hard would it be to fix this and paint over it so it wouldnt be noticable?

First, congratulations! Cabronitas are cool! Second, it shouldn't be too hard to fix that little oops. I'd try the age old damp paper towel and hot soldering iron trick. The heat will steam the damaged wood grain, causing it to swell. Work slowly and check your progress often. Once you get the wood swelled up to where you want it, let it dry and sand the area. You might need to repeat these steps a few times, depending on the density and porosity of the wood.

Good luck and keep us posted on the progress!

You can steam dents out using a soldering iron and a wet rag. Part of the difficulty with that is it is on the edge so you may have to do some profile sanding to get it to match the rest of the guitar.

The bottom line is every guitar I have ever finished has some dings that needed to be removed before they could be finished.

Congrats!  I was ogling that body in the Screamin' Deals section myself - it's pretty nifty.  I don't have anything to add to anorakDan's suggestions re: ding repair, just wanted to pile on with some positive regard for your choice.  What's the plan for finishing? Neck?  Hardware and other squiddly bits?

Also, welcome to the board!

If you look at the box, you can see what you've suffered there is shipping damage..,

So, before you get too heroic, you might consider a claim on UPS.

That said, the advice about steaming up dents is good. But, I'm not sure the soldering iron on wet rag trick will work on a dent that size. You may want to use a clothes iron.

Also, be aware that once you start trying to fix the damage, you may wreck any claim you'd like to make later.

On the flip side, that's a beautiful body, and a replacement may not be as choice a part. Plus, you'll have to wait for it. Finally, if you're going to put a solid finish on it, there's always filler, since you won't see it.

Filler is the word i needed to hear but now my question is...which one?  I inspected the box and I do believe it was the fault of UPS. Not to mention I worked there briefly in college and I have watched them sling dell computers across to conveyor belts. NO kidding. It will either be reranch crown royal purple or Copper red mica. Both of which are solid colors. Heres a couple pics to give you an idea of how it is shaping up thus far. I have fender american tuners and a fender hardtail bridge for it.

I don't really have any good filler advice, as I've never met a filler I didn't hate. So, hopefully somebody will have some good experience in that area that we'll all learn from.

I would try pulling it up with steam, first. But, as I mentioned before, you may want to use a clothes iron on a dent that size. Or, if you know an RC plane modeller, one of these covering irons would work even better...

They're usually teflon-coated, and are sized/shaped more conveniently for getting into nooks and crannies. Figure about $20 just about anywhere if you want to buy one.

It worked!
I would still suggest that you take a 3M 320 sanding sponge and re-sand the whole profile real lightly. It wont change the profile but it will clean it up.

I sanded it up and when it gets just a bit warmer here i will begin the sanding sealer coats. I still havent decided upon the color. Im torn between copper red mica and reranch crown royal purple.

:party07: Warmoth customer service rocks!! they responded back to me very quickly. I opted to keep my body but they are going to give me a discount!

WOW!! Good save! Great looking neck- I'm a fan of the vintage tilt-er, tint. Have you, perchance, a sample/swatch of those possible colors? Both sound intriguing. Copper, hmmm?

Purple!  :icon_thumright:

I can only recommend it. Which reminds me I haven't shown my Purple Frost La Cab yet. No where is that camera?  :icon_scratch:

I will look into that in the weekend.

Well, for someone else's project, my opinion means less than nothin', but I sure like that copper idea...

Found one. Sorry for the less than stellar picture quality.

Tuners will be replaced with chrome ones. Grease Bucket wiring. ABM 3256 bridge. Powertron Plus.

It rocks so much.  :party07:
