Broken Nut

Much to my dismay, I took my Geddy Lee J bass out of the case tonight to find the G string on the side of the neck instead being nestled into its home in the nut.  :doh:
Not sure how it happened, but the end of the nut south of the G string broke off.  So here is the question:  What does one generally charge to replace a nut (it is bound, if that makes a difference)? If it is more than $150, I would probably just grab one of the exotic beauties off the showcase (several for around $250) and call it a necessary upgrade.

Far be it from me to discourage buying a new neck, but I do nut replacements for $25, and that seems to be a pretty standard fee at the various shops around here as well.

If money wasn't so tight right now, I would be all over that new neck. 

If the tech's here in San Diego are comparable then I will give them my business.  If not, You might be getting some additional UPS business over there Cagey.

You can get pre-slotted Jbass nuts.  Never did the bass, but the Fender guitar size is easy to fit.  Or, just have a new nut installed... its no big deal really.

No need to apologize; that's a much better solution and just what he needs. Sending it here just for nut work wouldn't be cost-effective. By the time he got it back he'd be down $70 or better because of shipping. Now, if it needed fretwork, tuners, burnishing, inserts, etc. on top of that, then it makes more sense.

Thanks MikeW.  Clairemont is just over the hill from me out here in east county. 

I may give it a shot on my own first, but I have to find a nut that will work.  The Geddy Lee jazz has an exceptionally short nut width and I would want one that is pre-slotted rather than to cut my own.  If that doesn't work, I'm off to see Fred.
