Blue burst LP is basically done! Update - Better pics!

Okay I updated the original post with some good pics now.  Photography tips welcome, I'm trying to learn.

You do know that "highs" are endlessly tune-able with capacitors and resistors, right? I think it's quite ridiculous to have a guitar where the knobs don't do USEFUL things, like when someone says "I never use my tone control" - every number on the tone control from 1 - 10 should have a musical tone associated with it, usually people are just using capacitors that are way too big because "That's the way Leo did it" - grrrr. Leo got a cut-price deal on a boxcar full of 'em, he didn't even need to read the numbers on them! They were CHEEP.

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2008/Jun/Improving_Tone_Control_Effectiveness.aspx

87.5% of the guitars out there would be more useful instruments with their cap values cut by half or more. EXACTLY 87.5....

THIS GUY needs to try a .015, even a .007, to see if he can get USEFUL things out of the low end of a tone control. The race goes to the swift.

I say "basically" because there are some issues with the pickups.

I asked the Laces repeatedly (and by asked, I mean I showed them the wiring diagram) if the Jimmy Page wiring was possible with the Alumitone Humbuckers.  They said yes.  However, the ones they gave me are not splitable.   So at the moment it's just functioning like a normal Les Paul, I just have 4 push/pulls that are not doing anything extra.

Here's the thing though.  The pots are 500K, because that's the only option I could find for the long shaft push/pulls.  500K is not the recommended pot to use with the pickups.  I also have caps that are not recommended for those pups.

So it functions, it just has some insane treble bleed.  You pretty much have to have the tone pot to 11 ( :laughing7: I love those knobs) to even hear the high E, especially on the bridge.  In general they don't sound too great on clean settings.  On distortion they are kind of muddy too.

So I have decided they need to go.  I really like how they look, but I want the Jimmy Page wiring.  I probably won't get to it for a while, but I'm going to have to replace them.

Another thing that needs to change: I bought a custom chrome truss rod cover.  I need to install that.  I'll get around to that in a week or two.  There is a little bit of fret buzz on the 7th and 8th fret that I also need to address.  But after that I fix that stuff and I change the pups, it's going to be freaking gold.  It's gorgeous and it feels amazing to play.  It's lightweight too.

Other than that, it's in it's finished state.  Here are the pics:

Sorry for the flash on the first pic.

I'm open to suggestions for pickups.  I'm thinking Seymour Duncan, but I don't know.  I'm looking for versatility, and I play mostly rock and bluesy stuff, with a little exerimental stuff thrown in.  Let me know what you guys think.

Update - Okay, I have some waaaaayyy better pictures now.

I recently inherited a digital SLR - a Canon Rebel XTi.  It's a few years old, but still by far the nicest camera I've ever had.  Thanks to the photography tips in Freekmagnet's surf green Jazz bass thread http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=21803.msg322429#msg322429 (check it out if you haven't seen it, it's good... it's real good - both the tips/photography and the gorgeous classic style bass), I've been able to put it to good use taking decent pictures of my builds.  I'll be updating the Strat pics too.

I should also note that I got a screwless pickguard just to see what it would look like with a pickguard.  So I took pics with and without.

Insane top on that.

I guess I have to be the one, then - those yellow knobs don't looked aged, they look.... hmm. Q-Parts has some pretty neat knobs with stuff inset!:

http://www.allparts.com/knobs

Stones and shells, and acrylic insets.... There's a company MJGuitar that advertises knobs turned from acrylic rod in the back of the magazines, but everytime I try to find them I get MJ GuitarS, who want to sell me a $5,000 deformed Fender copy guitar. For that matter, you can buy 1" diameter pen-turning blanks for cheap and you're 3/4 of the way.

No words needed  :icon_thumright:

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

I will say one thing about the knobs - I also have a cream set (that also go to 11).  I've tried them both and they both look good.  However, the amber knobs bring out these little flecks of gold-ish/amber-ish natural wood colors that are present in the top.  You can't really see that in the pictures, but in person, it's definitely there.  If I put the cream knobs, you don't really notice that anymore and the whole guitar looks colder - like ice.  I prefer the warm look, but every once in a while I swap the knobs out because like I said, both sets look good.

:kewlpics:

Only needed one more posted of the back. The grain pattern visible on the side has me aching to know how cool the back looks  :laughing7:

How's that other elpee of yours coming along, Hannaugh? Can't wait to see side-by-side pics of those two together!

Lovely axes you've got there. All of 'em!

The back is nice.  It's not as nice as some other BK I've seen, but there are some nice grain patterns on the sides and the bottom.  I'll post pics soon.

The LP will be arriving in the next couple weeks.  I still have to order a bridge, tuners, and a nut, but other than that I'm ready to roll.  It's gonna be so nice.  There will definitely be some family photos when that arrives.
