Best Way to get keyboard tones from a guitar.

Ideally without Actives.

my idea is HIGH output pickups+a few solid state pedals+an Amp biased for Metal.

I have no idea what I'm talking about.

HELP!?

What keyboard tones? Your above setup would probably sound like a keyboard badly emulating a distorted guitar.  :dontknow:

About 1:30 in, I think he's playing EMG's

though I'd love to be able to emulate the keyboards in the opening of THIS.

I know you're thinking... if you want a keyboard... buy a keyboard... but guitars are prettier and cost less.

And I'd rather make a real noise, than trigger a sound file with a button.

Most of that I can get with the rainbow patch in the AXE-FX. In an more traditional format, I think a POG would be the 1st step. For that second clip, I wouldn;t want that myself, but have heard it. Need to see if I deleted it out of the 384 factory presets.

Still thinking a POG is you 1st move versus a pup change.

I have no idea what  the rainbow patch is, but that POG looks AMAZING.

I love this forum!

A graphtech bridge system with piezo saddles and midi processor would also do this. You could then output this signal into something like a Roland mmidi unit

Roland has just released/announced a new unit, the GR-55, that looks pretty cool. Sort of like a combined GR/VG/GT unit, and in a lovely blue colour...

I'm already trying to keep the cost down on my first warmoth. a second pickup system will be pushing an already overbudget (and thus not started) build. If I can fit those bridges in a Hipshot 6 bridge. I may still do it.

just stuffing that in a Telecaster with a Front Control route... will be tricky.

I just wish the graphtec system didn't require a big hole sidejack. I think you could fit that 13 pin connector in a strat top jack. PLEASE?!?

If you want it to be MIDI only, I'm pretty sure you could fit the 13 pin connector in a strat top jack.  One of my favorite things is blending/layering the piezo/MIDI sounds with the regular pickups though

I used a dremel to rout an extra side hole for my graph tech system, it was pretty easy

The best way is to do it 80's style and get yourself a midi setup with included midi pickup on the guitar.

...or just get a keyboard and expand your horizons.

I agree with Phil that he is using natural harmonics. To really get the most out of harmonics do a youtube search on harp harmonics and watch guys like Lenny Breau and then experiment with some delay. The guys that I'm aware of that excell at harp harmonices are, Lenney Breau, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Eric Johnson, and Carl Verheyen.

yes you can do that stuff with proper technique. and bright pickups. harmonics can be fun.

Wow. I just watched a few video's on Natural harmonics. that looks like so much fun!

Best way to do it - set up a keyboard, pick a sound you like, strap on your guitar and hit the keys with the top edge of the headstock. I guarantee your guitar will be making all kinds of keyboard tones.  :headbang1:

I'm a bassist, but I often have perverse dreams of making synth noises using my native instrument. There's a number of available toys out there to aid you in your quest. Most of them will get you close, but never quite there.

Here's me trying to cop a Moog-ish tone on my bass using an Electro Harmonix Bass Microsynth pedal, a phaser, and a little delay.

This video is way outdated but it's cool to hear the different keyboard sounds that can come from a guitar. This is Skunk Baxter from Steely Dan/Doobie Brothers and it made me think of this thread.

The Roland VG stuff can get synth tones without the latency and tracking issues of MIDI guitar. The strings are processed individually so it acts much more like a keyboard.
