That is very very cool. I can't wait to see another 7 string. I want one pretty badly, but I'm not sure about the transition.

Very cool! What is the body it will lay on?

Something I'll make myself from my stock of timbers but I need to progress my other builds first.

Wow, 7 strings on a 28 5/8 scale.  That's pretty colossal.  Whiles I totally dig the idea, I'm not sure I could play that comfortably.  Curious to hear how playable it is once built.

If I'm thinking correctly, that translates to adding 3 lower frets to your current axe, so when you're not playing down low, it's exactly the same scale.  Unless you're referring to the added string, which would probably be less of a transition than going from a 4 to 5 string bass, at least as far as technique is concerned.

Don't think that's the case.  It's a 24 fret neck spaced on the basis of a 28"+ scale, not a 25.5 scale with + 3 additional frets thrown in on the low end.  That means more space between the frets, and more string tension as well.  I see a big difference between a 24 3/4 and a 25.5 scale so I'm guessing throwing on a whole extra 3 inches in scale length has got to make a big difference from a feel standpoint.  I figure you're going to be using heavier gauge strings as well so it should be a bit of a workout to play compared to a regular strat type guitar.

You generally tune them lower, so the tension isn't the issue you might think it is. If you tried to tune strings that long to a standard guitar open "E", they'd feel like cheese cutters <grin>

I have a 27.7 7 string.. it doesn't take much, if any "getting used to" for me. The frets are further apart, but it's nice, more roomy.  :guitaristgif:

I have a 27" seven tuned normally.  The tension is not that big of a deal with it versus a 25.5" fender.  As far as adding another string, I found it a heck of a lot harder to get the hang of than a fifth string on a bass.  Chords are different, your playing with a pick generally nails the lower strings, and that B is now there so it is hard to miss it when trying to sound like a regular tuning.  Odd things.  But after a while, you get used to it and it becomes normal.  The longer scale was not hard to get used to, other than my hand will fatigue faster from the stretching.  Make it feel like you are a master when going back to a regular scale.  Only for a moment...

28 5/8" is almost exactly the same as a 25.5" scale extended by two frets.
2^(2/12) * 25.5 = 28.623

Might have to consdider the baritone option at some stage.  Probably do without the seventh string on the basis that it would probably be tuned low enough for my taste anyway.  Just curious, who makes the 27" seven strings?

This will be the body, currently roughcut top glued to roughcut back - rosewood on flame maple...

I'll start a WIP thread when it gets going properly.
