Well, as of Thursday, I'm back in band.
New band director, so a lot has changed in my semester hiatus.

So, chairs haven't been assigned yet, but first chair for trumpet will be a toss-up between me and my friend who just moved back. Since there were 6 trumpets (almost half the band), I was trying to move the different freshman trumpets to different instruments  :laughing7:

In the instrument-mixing, I picked up a mellophone and started playing. Makes me think I'll try to learn French Horn this semester :toothy10:

There's also one Alto Sax, I think. I may try to learn that as well.

I got bored today, and picked up a trombone and started learning.

Of course, I still have plans to learn violin.

After I expand my piano playing.

Do I have a sickness? :toothy12:

French Horn is fun! and Mellophone ROCKS!!! Its probably the only brass instrument that doesnt distort to crap when you blast away on it. I used to shake windows in the band hall with mine and never lose pitch  :headbang1:

Not at all.  When I was in high school I played trombone, bass trombone, euphonium and tuba - all in different bands.
I also played guitar in another band.  Yep I was in 5 bands - one of which toured Europe.  Sadly, that was the one I played Tuba in.

if you learn violin, then mandolin is right around the corner, and those are cool - (hint I got one!)

Dont forget the uke... gotta have the uke and Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter memorized

Okay, Trevor. Be like that... excel at everything musical you do.
You're full of surprises.

Mando is another I'd like to learn. Along with sitar as a possibility.

I played the euphonium in high school. Learned bits and pieces of the rest of the brass instruments because I had to teach a few of their sectionals.

You can get my older brother to repair all your brass and wind instruments, symphony orchestras from all over the world send their gear to him for repair. Hes part retired now and i asked him what hes going to do to keep active and his reply was build violins  :icon_scratch:

learning to play the Sitar was one of the most rewarding musical experiences I ever had. If you're serious send me a message and I'll point you in the right direction...

I have to vote sax.  Such a wonderful soul to that thing.  I have very fond memories of playing through school.  In fact, I should pick it back up.  :laughing7:

You guys are all multi-instumentalists.   I am still trying to play the guitar properly.
when I figured out I was only going to get so good at guitar, I picked up other instruments to compensate

I started on Sax and Bass at the same time (more years ago than I'll admit).  I switched to Bari Sax (pure sex), and started to pick up guitar.  Along the way, I learned a little Tuba, and I now am decent at Trombone (my wife is a pro).  I own Mandolins, a Banjo and a Charango.  I finally got around to piano/electric organ a couple years ago, because I was shamed into it.

Jack of all trades, master of ?

Love a great dirty sounding sax. The guitar phrasing for lead solso is based around them in contemporary music, it almost seems natural for a guitar player to look at saxes.

Brass stuff can sound mighty BIG indoors but loses it's volume acoustically outside. And quite hard to mike properly too.

I reckon it's great that you have a school that promotes this sort of musical involvement. Does that happen in a lot of high schools and colleges? (you see stuff on TV and tend to assume that's the norm in the USA school system, but is it really or are some schools just not interested in doing that?) :dontknow:

Obviously Max, IF the opportunity exists to branch out and learn another instrument - take full advantage. I did when in HS band, and it sets a president for your later approach to music. The only suggestion I might make is to not spread yourself too thin, and endeavor to really learn just 2 or 3 at a time. That will more than keep you busy for the year. Good fortune to you - you're quite ambitious  :icon_thumright:

Mellophone is basically trumpet in a different key, so nothing really new there.

French horn, I'm not sure how hard that one will be, since it seems like it has similarities to trumpet.

Trombone, well, I just had it laying around. Otherwise, I wouldn't pick it up.

Sax, well, it would have been what I'd been playing for years, but it looked more intimidating than trumpet.  :laughing7:
