Hello Gents
First of all, I'm new here and would like to say hello to everyone.

I'm planning to order a maple/maple neck with a custom designed headstock.
The bridge is flat mounted fender style hardtail. Now the question is:
Does the type of bridge have anything to do with choosing between angled or
straight headstock?

Welcome to the Boards!  :occasion14:

The angled headstock only eliminates the need for string trees in most cases.  It has little to no bearing on bridge choice.  :icon_thumright:

First off, Welcome...

And second....no, headstock has no bearing on what type of bridge you are using..... :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the quick replies!

One more question regarding the neck:
Is LSR roller nut only to be used in conjunction with a trem bridge?
Or can it help with heavy bending?

Mainly for trems.  I've never seen one on a hardtail.  It's supposed to reduce friction in the nut and promote tuning stability.  I don't see why it couldn't be used for a hardtail with extreme bending.  I could certainly see how it would benefit with divebombs and pullbacks, allowing the entire string to stretch and contract between the tuner and anchor points.

That's what I suspected... after looking at my Fender Strat Deluxe.
The circular slots where the strings come out toward the pegheads
are not low or deep enough to accommodate the angle of tilted headstock...

Thanks again for the replies, gents!

Will I run into any possible tuning issues if I go without string trees on
a straight headstock and non trem bridge?

Yes, unless you somehow staggar the  heights of the tuners.

You should buy a book, i believe the title is: Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlwine.  While not the last word on guitar construction, it will give you a lot of answers.

Thanks for the info!!!

Not able to use the staggered tuners because i want to go with 3x3 peghead design.
Guess I should just go with angled headstock...  that means no LSR...

Is there any trick to use staggered pegheads on 3x3 straight headstock???

If you just make sure that your nut slots are wide enough not to catch the string, and put a bit of graphite from a pencil in the slots to lubricate, you shouldn't have any problems with your nut especially with a hardtail. Nearly all tuning stability problems are caused by the nut slots being too tight and catching the string. They should just set in there, and be held in place by the angle of the headstock or by string trees. Note: the stock warmoth graphite and corian nuts I've bought have always need to be widened out, they seem to be aiming for the .008 string crowd or something.

I'm not sure what you mean by a 3x3 straight headstock?  Can you show us picture?  I don't want to give you wrong advise.

Sorry, I meant 3x3 peghead arrangement. I'm planning to order a neck with a custom headstock.

If you're going to have a tilt back headstock, why are you worrying about string t's?

I don't know what shape of headstock you plan on building, but I have a strat hardtail with a regular Warmoth strat neck and have never used string trees.
Mr. Cray [my strat] stays in tune forever and I have never had strings slip out of the nut.

I also recommend the book by Dan Erlwine.  It is a fantastic resource book!

My lastest build is a straight peghead, no staggered tuning machines, and has no string tees.  No buzzing and no coming out of the nut.

Thanks for the help, gents!
If possible, I rather go with straight headstock with no string trees... and LSR roller nut! :)

Does warmoth make a 3 x 3 non-tilt back headstock?  i didn't think they did?
