Anyone up for a blues jam?

next time around i dont have a mic or modeling software. i would participate because well you dont need that much talent to play the blues. not that tallent doesnt help you play the blues better

the thing about blues is it's easy to play OK - - but really difficult to play really well.

So true. And I think a lot of people are in the same boat as Dan (i.e. don't have access to a proper recording setup). I know I am. Sure, I can run a line-out into my soundcard, but it sounds like crap, and doesn't exactly inspire me to share the resulting recording with everyone.

Thats pretty much exactly what I had to do. Guitar staight into the line-in on the soundcard lol, not the easiest recording i've ever made.

Yeah, but we're not looking for the next SRV here. Just wanting to have a little fun.

Ok, battling on in the face of adversity.. I've actually had a go at this !. I'm not happy with it, but then I'm not using my usual gear (read a few posts back, it got nicked), so I don't think it's all that bad for a guitar plugged directly into a shitety soundcard hehe, was fun battling the latency  :headbang1:

This is everyone + me (i've tacked mine on at the end)

And this is the solo reording

Feedback apreciated and rock on fellas !  :guitarplayer2:

I just cut one after panther which took me to the end of the backing track.
It's getting late so I'll mix it tomorrow and post the tracks.
I've got a few ideas about how to continue also so maybe I'll add an other 24 or 48 measures.

Nice. You know, everyone has done a great job so far. I think we can learn a lot about each other doing something like this. I can't wait to hear the finished product.

Yes! This is pretty interesting. Rhythm Section and rhythm guitar - Nice work guys!

Now here's what really happened with my take.

I originally cut my track in the same time space as Panther, right after djf67, before I knew that Panther has cut a track in that time space,
and then came back to check the thread and saw that Panther has also cut there, so I moved mine 1 minute down towards the end.

Well, the groove is slightly different from 4:50 to 5:48 and I really liked how I was interacting with the other guys in the band from 03:52 to 04:50
so I copied 03:52 to 04:50, and pasted it in at 04:50 to 05:48 and moved 04:50 to 05:48 down by 1 minute, so there's now an extra minute at the end.

Just a F.Y.I. : There is some time shifting showing between the djf67 version and the Panther version and also with the original track.
Not a problem for me ... ( yet that is ) unless someone is going to re composite all of the tracks from scratch.
" IF " ... there is a remix, please keep us informed.

I've got 2 mix scenarios going on here because I don't want to mess with anyones solo tone or placement / relationship to the band. Brick wall limit to -0.1 dB.

1) http://www.sightsea.com/music/WBJ/UWBJ_SK_1.mp3
Full track with all solos and extra minute at end: Everything is still a bit on the "harsh" side and
Snare and cymbals are too loud in my opinion.

2) Mix 2: http://www.sightsea.com/music/WBJ/UWBJ_SK_2_tweaked.mp3
I flattened out everything with a multi band compressor, bringing the snare and cymbals down a bit, trying to open up some space in the mix.
It's more listenable to me this way, less ear fatigue, and I believe it will translate better on more systems,
but of course it's just my "subjective" take on it.
I don't think it's really smooth yet, that would take going back to the original tracks and being able to work with the original band tracks, hopefully the isolated drums bass and rhythm guitar and all solos individually.

3) http://www.sightsea.com/music/WBJ/UWBJ_SK_Solo.mp3
Me Solo track: Warmoth/Alembic Mahogany Maple/Ebony (my avatar) ~direct~ into Gina3G Mic pre.
EQ, Compression, Reverb, Echo ( no amp sim or modeling ) Bridge and Middle Pickups.
Ernie Ball .009s, Dunlop .46mm pink, and some occasional finger tip.  :-)
I did a lot of punch ins, being more concerned with composition rather than just a one take,
I hope this isn't breaking any rules.

I can make the 16/44 or 24/44 .wav files available if anyone wants them. Just let me know.

Nice track Doughboy!
( and everyone else also ... very cool playing everyone )
You cut yours over the first 24 bars so it's probably best to not change that.
What version of the backing track did you use? I ask because of the time slide I've been seeing between versions.
How do we get Doughboy onto the current composite?

Streaming Links: and PreMasters with plenty of headroom ( will be up shortly )

I used the original MP3 file posted by Mully. I asked before I cut my solo as to where I should do it & was told 'anywhere', as it would be cut & pasted later.

Btw, I love your solo & the tone is really nice. Some of the licks remind me of slack key guitar, which I love.  :guitaristgif:

Thanks. I'd never heard of "Slack-Key" until now. Googled it. Interesting. My tuning was "normal" on this one, but I often tune my acoustic like a baritone.

Understood on the "original track"
There have been some EQ changes since then but I can just line you up visually, with the first 24 bars by comparing your tracks to the EQd version.
I can paste you into the premasters of both if you like ... but only if it's OK with who ever has been mixing so far.
Someone just let me know.

It's OK with me.
I'd be totally into breaking this down to all the raw tracks and bringing it up as a final master,
but I'd want to handle it with the direction and input of the players, ( as in ... let me know if I'm missing anything, or have got you mixed wrong )
and only if it's ok with the folks that started this.

But ... we're not finished with the players yet.
It would be great to be adding players beside all the raw individual tracks as opposed to a stereo mix that's locked into place.

Just let me know.

I was trying to mix this and keep track of it all - but you seem WAY more particular about than I do, so you're in charge now.

LOL ... whell maybe we should call it being old and anal  :laughing7:
but I'm glad to take up the torch.

I'll get Doughboy in there sometime this afternoon and post both a mastered mix and a pre master for anyone else that wants to play.

Do you have the original individual drum tracks ( split out to snare, kick, overheads etc. ) and the bass and rhythm guitar in .wav ?
If so, let me know and I'll give you FTP access to a directory on my site and you can PUT them.

Thanks,

Steve

no - If you look near the beginning of this thread you'll see that it's just a backing track MP3 that Mullyman posted... I serious doubt he has each of the instruments.

I honestly don't hear anything wrong with the original track. I mean this isn't Stairway To Heaven is it?

Understood. Thanks.

All I know is once this one is done, I'm so in on the next one. Perhaps we could get a sticky thread or something where we just put the completed / in progress files. Then everyone will know where to find our skills  :glasses10:

We should make this a monthly thing. We can put up an MP3 backing track on the 1st of each month & the cut off can be the 20th & we can all download it & add our own solos. I'm up for making the next backing track if there are no objections.
