It's funny you posted this, I just read a book where theres a section on trouble shooting amp problems. They say to check, with a multi meter, voltages along the signal path from the speaker, back to the input.
with the amp on, each time you put your meter lead onto a test point, you will hear a "pop" as your meter disrupts the signal. The further you go towards the input jacks the louder the pop should get. when you get to a point where the pop is non existant or a lot quieter, you found your trouble.
