Alder as a Neck Wood?

An alder neck would seem like an obvious thing to try for someone who wants a tone between maple and mahogany, but almost nobody offers it.  Does anyone know why this is?

I'd say is if it's not at least as hard as maple, it's not going to work as a fretboard...Since maple seems to be just about the least hardest of most fretboard woods... :dontknow:

Alder is also uglier in terms of grain pattern when comparing to other neck woods, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder i guess...

Carvin offers alder necks on all their guitars as an option. bolt on thin to holdsworth thick.  They save about 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound over maple. With a double truss rod, there definitely wouldn't be a problem with "softness". My holdsworth neck (set neck, sort of a wider '59 lespaul carve) has a single rod and has no problems.

I say the world needs more Alder necks!!!
