Advice needed, Fender Bassman

Late to the game, but would have told you to jump on it as well... Where did you find that in KC?  Somebody had a very similar Bassman/2x12 cab with the amp nominally redone at Richard's Music in Lawrence and was asking $1200...

It was at an antiques warehouse somewhere over near Kemper I think, near the river bottom, I kinda went with family on a whim and got a cool find!  Wouldn't even have gone if my lunch plans hadn't fallen through!

How much does a transformer repair cost?  I'm just wanting to make sure I can get a return on my investment with this amp when it comes time to sell it.

I sent a 65 deluxe transformer down for them to test out for me and they tested it and said nothing was wrong with it and did not charge me a dime.  That was a few years back and they are a much larger company now so I don't know if they would do that today. I do know that they would rather rewind a vintage transformer than sell you one of their tone clones, which are exceptional themselves.  I don't think it would cost more than $120.00 but I have no idea for sure. I do know I would not deal with any one other than them as far as transformers for my amps.

The bottom line is if you put another $400.00 into that amp which is highly unlikely you are still miles ahead of the game. If I scored something like that and it sounded pretty good with a little work I would go all the way and find NOS tubes and make that baby as toneful as possible.

As a matter of fact I'll give you $600.00 for it right now!  :icon_jokercolor:

I look forward to seeing pictures of it and can't wait to see what speakers are in the cabinet. You may find some real hidden treasure there.

Alright here's your pics junkies!  :icon_biggrin:

The tolex appears to actually be in really good condition.  Besides a load of dust there are only a couple of permanent scuffs.  The metal parts are a little rusty, any suggestions on removal??

Also the cutting in and out that I described could have been a product of the frayed speaker cable, which is an easy fix!  I'm gonna call my tech sometime this week to get things figured out.

EDIT: well warmoth is not letting me upload the pics....I'm gonna put em on a hosting site and send the link...

Why it's practically new! Wish I looked that good.... But though it may be tempting - you can do a lot of harm to that thing by messing with it, if there's some leaked-out caps. Let the tech at it FIRST. What kind of boat are you going to buy with the profits? :evil4:

Nice shot of the ground switch.  That is where the death cap is.  Have a tech remove the death cap, take the ground switch out of the circuit, and put a three prong plug on the amp.  A quick recap of what it does is, it basically flips the hot and neutral wires from the power cord into the power transformer.  Back when plugs only had two prongs, you could get it backwards and this was a way of fixing that.  But, you fill a cap up with electricity, and then if you touch something that is grounded, it discharges through you to ground.  With a properly wired three prong plug, these problems go away, and the cap is not needed.  If you do mess with it before that is done, be careful.

Yeah I'm not touching the insides or playing the thing til my tech gets her fixed up.

Wouldn't want to mess anything up in there!

Sorry to double post but I have a question....

Will it do any harm to the amp if I blow dust out of the back of the head with a compressed air can?  If not whats the best way of cleaning that all out?

oh and also is there an especially good product for taking some of the deeper dust out of the tolex?  I used a moist towel but it only cleaned the top layer of stuff off.

Thanks!

No problem with compressed air - except maybe around speakers

Soap and water for the tolex.  Scrub it good.  No chemicals.

Got any pics of the insides yet?

One really cool thing - a major amp maker was trying to figure out how to get all the grease, soldering flux, metallic sanding scunge out of their brand-new amp chassis -
A: commercial dishwashing machine! It is very, very, very important to let everything DRY thoroughly after, though. And probably not good for a retro-cleaning. If you want it clean-clean you want to pull the chassis. You might want to talk to the tech, because he'll likely do it anyway and there's a step to be saved somewhere in there.

Only pics I have of the insides are of the tubes in the back...I'm not especially keen on the idea of pulling the chassis out of there...

Yeah if I can leave some trickier stuff to him I will.

Alfang: "what are the chances that youd sell it for $801.00?"

Tempest: " A million to one"

Alfang: " So your saying I gotta chance?"

I've been busy as of late and haven't even had the chance to call my tech but I'm going to call him tomorrow for sure.  Stay tuned for updates!
