Hey y'all, I'm new here, saving up for my strat build! So blessed this exists! I'm planning on a roasted maple neck and roasted swamp ash body, gonna dye it and oil finish, or does a roasted body need a finish? Either blue or green lol! Any advice on roasted wood? Kinda nervous about drilling, taking it to a luthier either way. Also what are y'alls favorite strat locking tuners, in black? Lastly, can some of y'all posted your roasted unfinished or oield builds? I love looking at different personalized guitars! Sorry this is really strangely typed, I am diagnosed ADHD.

Welcome!

While an unfinished roasted body won't just fall apart of explode or anything like that, it will build up dirt, not be water/sweat resistant, etc and I'd definitely recommend some kind of finish on it

Roasted swamp ash turns a deep/warm brown once you apply a finish; trying to dye it blue or green will probably not yield a good result. I would go with regular/unroasted swamp ash if you want a blue or green guitar

For tuners I'm a big fan of Hipshot and they come in black

This is my baritone build with a roasted swamp ash body finished in Tru Oil:

My next Warmoth build (not that i need any more guitars!!) will almost certainly be a Swamp ash body (not roasted) that I will dye either red, green, or blue using SamaN water based dye, and then finish it with a couple coats of wipe-on catalyzed hard oil, probably the Osmo Polyx-oil again. Fast and Easy!!! Pics of both products in my two current "in progress" threads...

Welcome aboard ! I would say if you want to dye it blue or green do not get roasted, just get regular swamp ash. If you just want to apply a clear coat or oil finish the roasted would look great with no color added. I did a swamp ash back on a rosewood top and just stained the swamp ash lightly to more match the top. Then used Rubio Monocoat over the entire thing.

Good luck and have fun !

WHOAH!!!!!!!!!! That is sick!!!!!!!! Thanks for the heads up! Was debating on non roasted, durability-wise, is it really that different? Hipshots look awesome!

Durability on a neck is one thing, I understand that, roasted maple is great, you should also consider stainless steel frets.

But durability regarding the body... well, what do you expect from it? D'you wanna go swimming with it? Use it as a golf club or tennis racket? 😅

No seriously, if you put a finish on it, a non-roasted swamp ash body might outlive you.

AND! On a lot of bodies incl. strat, for (slightly less than) the price of roasted swamp ash, you can get 1-piece swamp ash which will probably look even better with a transparent finish! Just sayin'... ;)

That's true, I was eyeing that one piece! Do you think a raw maple with an oil and wax finish would hold up okay?

Roasted maple, yes, it doesn't need a finish at all. I'm trusting Warmoth enough on that to own two unfinished roasted maple necks (modern construction).

I wouldn't do that with un-roasted maple and you're on your own if you do.
