A tribute to dad

A couple of days ago, I was almost forced to sell my first warmoth, due to lack of money and a coupple of unpaid bills. My dad refused to let me sell the guitar, and told me he'd take care of my bills, if I paid him back when I got my next salary.

That made me think of a story my mom told me when I started playing guitar in 2004. She told me that in his younger days (before I was born), my dad used to have this black fender stratocaster. He loved that guitar. But when I was born in 1990, he had to sell the guitar to buy a car because the car he had earlier only had two seats. My mom said that selling the guitar almost killed him (not literaly, but you know what I mean). And he's been talking about the guitar ever since.

So what I'm planning to do, for his 50'th birthday, is to build a replica of that guitar out of warmoth parts. I have spoken to tonar, and he has given me many cool ideas. He's also finishing the body and neck for me.

This is what I planned it to be like, based on photos.

Alder body with tonar-black finish (nitro)
Quartersawn maple neck with indian rosewood fretboard tonar-vintage tint, and some cool decals.
Parchment pickguard (or I'll get an aged white one from ebay or something)
Lindy Fralin hot vintage set pickups
Vintage trem
Vintage tuners

I'm also thinking about asking DangerousR6 to make a custom neckplate that contains a horseshoe, because my dad own 5 race horses which he spends much time with. And the writing; A tribute to dad (above the horseshoe) and my name; Andreas Midtlyng (beneath the horseshoe)

This and two other builds starts in the beginning of july, because that's when I have the money to do it.

A great thanks to tonar, which is very dedicated and helpful, and Max, that came up with some cool ideas during the planning of this build.

Stay tuned!

You need to post some photos of the original. If nothing else I or one of the other graphic artists here could help you with the decals and that sort of thing. It's a good idea

That's really a heart warming story.  You started playing only in 2004 ?  I really like your chops in your video and I am sure your dad is proud of you.

Haven't made up your mind about Callaham? Tonar will give you a recommendation for them.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. This is awesome.

I love the parchment pickguard for this guitar.

On the trem unit I would suggest using the Retrospect trem. http://retrospec-guitar.com/store/fender-parts/50s-strat-bridge-assembly/

I managed to score several sets of saddles directly from the maker in England four years back and used then on all my Callaham trem units.
Recently I managed to get my hand on one of his complete assemblies and put it in my "54" Replica Strat.  It was at that time that I found out that Retrospect is dealing his products in the US so this is the same assembly I received.  They are exceptionally accurate to the original 50's trem and would be perfect for this guitar.  The guy that builds this stuff attention to detail is beyond belief.  I have used his Bakelite aged covers, had a set of his reproduction PAF's which are among the most sought after reproduction PAF's on the market and seen other items that are amazing. He is known as the "Over The Pond Guy" and it is great that Retrospect is selling some of his stuff.

Having lost my father at an early age (for both of us) - I find this a wonderful opportunity to give back something that's beyond words  :guitaristgif:

Yes, he's playing a MusicMan Steve Morse now, and he have told me he miss the classic strat sound, so this would be something he'd appreciate!

As I said earlier, I'll start building it in july. I also start on a swamp ash strat with flame maple top in mary kay finish, seymour duncan hot rails and a indian rosewood w/ebony fretboard.
I get a $6000 salary in july, so that'd be a great start on these projects, as I can order all the parts at the same time, instead of ordering the whole guitar in 4 or 5 shipments, that results in expencive shipping fees and taxes.

Are you putting the rosewood fingerboard on your father's taste? I always think black strat looks nice with maple neck... only like it with dark fingerboard with a matching headstock...

The Mary Kay is for yourself, right?

Yes, he have a "thing" for dark fingerboards. And the guitar he had was also rosewood.

The Mary Kay is for myself, yes. I'll have tonar painting it, if he has time, and wants to :)
