I was recently gifted a couple of pieces of quarter sawn redwood. They were 11 1/4" w. 3/4" thick and 23" long. So I glued them one a top the other and split it down the middle.

I have some walnut coming that's 2" wide to go in the middle. Then I went online to the place I got the figured walnut drop top I have and got this in Black Korina.

We'll see what happens.

This will be fun to follow. Looking forward to seeing how you do with it.

I'm kinda looking forward to seeing what I do too. I haven't really formed a picture in my head yet. So I have no idea what I'll do yet. Perhaps I'll be inspired once the other wood pieces get here. Usually I put all the wood together on my bench and stare at it until something pops into my head. Sometimes it's a good idea, sometimes it's a headache.

I am happy. My Korina arrived.

Still waiting on some other pieces but it shouldn't be long. :hello2:

That's some nice figuring in that black korina! I hope you're using a transparent finish.

Yes, it'll be transparent, at least the top will. I might go with some kind of dye on the back and sides, haven't really decided yet.
I have some clear sanding sealer coming as I've found that grain filler doesn't always work well with Korina. You get a better look with the sealer.

That's a handsome slice o' lumber, Phil.  Congrats.  Gonna stay tuned to see how this goes.

Thanks. I am quite happy with it. The "Something to Play with" job with the figured walnut top is on hold right now, per the buyer's request. This should give me something to do. Still waiting on some materials right now, so I'll have to be patient and sit here and stare at my wood.

. Err, that really didn't come out right.

That's some beautiful Korina, Phil.

In these isolated times, many of us are doing exactly that, though.

Isn't that the truth! :laughing7:

A bit of progress. Outside pieces are redwood, inside is black walnut. I put a couple of pieces of birch veneer in there just for the halibut.

It's just barely wide enough for a Tele body. But I didn't want to add anymore pieces in there for fear it would look too busy. Simple schemes are usually better.

Nice laminations. That's going to look good.

Thanks, I'm hoping they work out well so far it seems so. But, as I'm sure you well know, you never know till the clamps come off.
Meanwhile, I go with the motto of the Excelsior Motor Co. "We can but Try." :headbang:

That's going to be one fine-looking body!

Also goes to show once again that you can't have too many clamps. Ex-wife used to think I had a fetish or something...

Gracias Sir.  I believe MIT once did a study and proved conclusively that it's practically, theoretically, mathematically, and profoundly impossible to have too many clamps.

I believe you're right. I think it was this guy who did the study

Anyway, that looks like it’s going to be a fine piece for a body.  :icon_thumright:

My wife always asks me if I really need more clamps. I just tell her I only have 27 of them and need 32 to do the job right but can make do with 28. :icon_biggrin:

The champions of clamp aquisition are acoustic makers with their spool clamps. To determine the number of spool clamps you need you add up all your c clamps, bar clamps, cabinet clamps, pole clamps, and bridge clamps. Divide by 2, then multiply that number by 3, then double that number. Then add on two more just to be safe. :icon_thumright:

No kidding. I had an urge to build an acoustic a few years back, but after watching a few videos, I decided I couldn't afford or justify the massive specialty clamp collection I'd need.
