12 string build

Some more clear and a logo

After snapping the pick I though my logo was crooked.  I had to go back and double check...must be the angle I am holding the neck.  I am going to let this cure for about 48 hours, hit with some 320 paper and apply the final coats.

I am also spraying a POS acoustic guitar my son bought for $20.  We striped it , shot some black and sprayed with champagne flake.  This is a slightly larger flake.  Looks a lot different.  I will post a photo for comparison.

Here is some tease of the body

And here is the acoustic.  Notice the difference in the flake.  This flake size is .008.  The guitar is .004.  I have found a flake/clear ratio of about 1:12.  You could even go 1:16 if you are looking at lighter applications.  Also you have to remember to take out the screen filter in your gun.  flake will not pass thru and clog the system.

MAJOR mishap today.  As i was taking the body off the hanger, the wrench I was using fell about 3 feet onto the top of the body.  I will spare everyone the carnage photos.  I am so sick to my stomach.

To repair the ENTIRE top would need to be sanded and filled.  I would have to respray the whole thing.  With this amount of layers and flake it would be impossible to match.

Option #2.  I was thinking about using a small pearled pick guard.  Well this pick guard is now a critical part of the build, and has grown in size.  I have styled what I think is a classy piece and will cover the carnage.

I was just saying to my wife I need a proper work space to store tools and work on bodies.  This would have never happened.

Back to work on the pick guard.

Tough break - I feel for you. I spanked the front of my cranberry VIP with a belt buckle and took a little divot out. Made me sick. Mine will be easier to repair, though.

I've been where you are, sir.  I feel  your pain.  Hang in there, and don't do anything rash.

OUCH!!! Your work on this project is SO gorgeous, I know the pickguard/repair is going to work out beautifully also--I'm rootin' for you! Really outstanding work.

I starting working on pick guard.  Here is what I have so far.  There is some tweaking to do on the edges of the guard to even it out.  I would rather do that with a sander than a saw!!

I am going to let the guitar cure a few more days before final polish.

How does it look?  Be honest.  This was certainly a case of function over form.

Sorry to hear about the mishaps but it really is looking amazing. That flake is awesome especially with that matching headstock.

Whatcha got in mind for the pickups? i currently have 3 strat pickups in my Pacifica 12. I'lm impressed enough with the GFS memphis on the bridge of my 6 string, that I have considered a pair for my 12. Or maybe the mini-tron version of it. I always thought I could never give up having positions 2 & 4 until I got EMGs and found that while interesting occasionally,  1,3, and 5 were more useful to me in general. Ever since I have contemplated 2 pickups of the non humming, non muddy variety

As for criticism... I have only one. it loooks nice, real nice, but the front edge of the tailpiece countersink looks a bit ragged in the pics. If its for real and not just an illusion,I think I would have cleaned that up even at the expense of making it a hair bigger than planned. It may not be noticable once you have strings and hardware in place but I dont think I could have put all the work into finishing to find out for sure

It's pretty unusual to have pickup mounting rings on a pickguard. The openings in the 'guard normally preclude the need for them, as the gory mounting details and pickup pubes are hidden from view.

I am considering eliminating them.  It will depend on how clean I get the mounts cut.

I've been silently following this thread. It's really shaping up as a terrific build. I really like the flake, and I know how tricky that stuff is to work with. Great work, keep it up !!

Shame about your calamity. I feel your pain. I'm terrified of just such an awful eventuality. At least there's some small blessing in that it happened in a spot that can be covered.

At first I wasn't crazy about the pickguard shape. But it's growing on me. And I'm in agreement about eliminating the rings if you can.
