If you want to pain graphics on the guitar, buy a unpainted alder guitar (you don't have to fill the grain on alder), prime it and paint it.  If you prep the surface you can paint it with any decent spray paint. I would watch the deals page (http://www.warmoth.com/showcase/showcase_deals.cfm)...

Did you ask the experts?  I always ask Warmoth, and they have been very accurate.  11 weeks for a custom body and paint.  A little over a week for a showcase neck (no paint - Indian Rosewood).

We put a little tag in our dog in case she was ever lost -- Warmoth could start putting those tags into guitars!  They are real tiny, so they could be stuck almost anywhere.  You could even make a few bucks off of us (the vets do)....

Yes, you can mount the pickup directly to the body with the springs behind the pickup.  I did it on my Warmoth tele, and I like it....
