The effects of _______ on tone

Everything in nature has it's own resonating frequency, so it is technically true that anything you put on or near a guitar will impact it's sound, including your belly. Folks who say they can hear the difference between plastic pick guards and wood should try playing one hour after eating a...

Inlayed Indian Rosewood LP Now Complete - final pics

Bill - Good guess. The silver backing on the pickguard (I had to protect all that art!) put her at 9.9 exactly. So far, the weight seems appropriate, not a problem. Jack - Lavin just kept coming up with more ideas. I feel like I should frame it and hang it on the wall, but it sounds so good.....

Inlayed Indian Rosewood LP Now Complete - final pics

I have added the last two pieces of art by Craig Lavin to this build, an ebony pickguard backed in sterling silver and an ebony truss rod cover.  Craig built both for me and added the inlay art, showng flying fish fleeing the Dorado leaping on the peg head. This completes the project, my vision...

    ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler

I had good luck using the credit card for application, then rubbing furiously with burlap after letting it set up only for a few minutes. Really cut down on the sanding.

Rosewood LP - New Lavin Inlay Art

I have added pictures from Craig Lavin of his last two pieces of inlay art for this Indian Rosewood hollow body LP style from the showcase. The pickguard is going to be backed with sterling silver and both it and the TR cover will be finished. The scene is now finished and shows numerous flying...

    Custom Inlay on Warmoth necks

Check out the links to Craig Lavin's site and the recent article in Modern Guitars about his work. Craig does phenominal inlay work on guitars and has an extensive network of luthiers to help out on the project. This link is to my photo page on a recent Warmoth build, featuring completed and...

    Rosewood Les Paul Photo Update

14 coats of hand rubbed McFaddens on the body, and John Kinnaird's 12 coats on the neck. You can see your detailed reflection from across the room. I can't seem to get it on film, but the depth of the finish brightens the whole thing, especially the deep red padouk neck. I originally wanted to...

    Rosewood Les Paul Photo Update

Thanks for checking it out. The logo is a name given to me by friends who liked my home brew beer some 20 years ago. Yes, it is a pun on my last name "Diklich". Inspiration for this one came from a Bennedetto arch top that looked equally dark, almost like an old viola. The ebony pickguard inlay...

    Rosewood Les Paul Photo Update

I hope this posting works, as I am a computer gook, not geek. This is a hollow body Indian Rosewood LP from the Warmoth showcase with a padouk neck. It is almost finished, lacking only the truss rod cover and a custom ebony pickguard, both of which will feature custom inlay by Craig Lavin...

    My Number One

Did you have your pickguard made for you or reshape a regular Gibson guard yourself? I need a pickguard that will fit the Warmoth carved top body to use as a template for one I'm having made in ebony.

    Wood pickguards

Thanks for your opinions on pickguards in general. Based on the Warmoth gallery, most of those LP "copiers" do not use one on carved tops, so your stance (crusade?)appears to be the norm, not the exception.  I don't use a pick, so the guard is a jazz style finger rest for me, a style I don't...

    Wood pickguards

Thanks for the advice. I'll check them out. I've also gotten info from THGKNOBS.COM. Real nice exotic wood knobs, rings, etc.

    Wood pickguards

I'm considering an ebony pickguard for my Indian Rosewood arched top LP in order to get some custom inlay on the pickguard. I'm getting mixed results from web research re: warping, and finding it hard to find an ebony pickguard out there at all. Have any of you done ebony on an LP? All wood or...
