Yea, I built that (most of it)...

This guitar was a dream...now its reality.

I've wanted an electric guitar for awhile now, but I never thought I could afford one...so I built it instead. The body was fully designed, constructed, and finished by me. I drew the design out on a napkin, then made a template for it on some wood. The wood for the body is walnut and spalted maple. The neck is something that I was not comfortable trying to build, so Warmoth provided the neck. This is my second build...my first is a bass with Z-body and Warmoth neck. I did everything...wiring, finish, construction...except the neck on this build.

Here are the specs:

Neck: One piece goncalo alves, Telecaster construction, poly finish on the headstock with raw finish on fingerboard and back of neck, fatback contour.

Body: Spalted maple over walnut (wood from ebay), semi-hollowbody construction, sculpted neck joint, body finished with zpoxy, shellac, and Deft rattlecan (gloss). Neck pocket made to fit Tele style necks.

Stuff: Bone nut, Gotoh mini locking tuners, Warmoth pickguard cut by me, Bill Lawrence (Wilde Pickups) L-90 pickups, Schaller roller bridge with homemade piezo pickup/preamp with separate jack, mag pu's wired vol vol -> 3way switch ->master q filter -> master tone. Piezo vol pot also acts as a master guitar kill switch.

Its been awhile since I've posted anything, but I couldn't help it because I am so proud of my guitar and what I was able to do. There will be more!

Mockingbird/Tele hybrid? Nice!  :headbang1:

Yea...for a rookie like me, routing out a tele pocket was easier than routing out one for a strat. I could have bought a template, but I went with a cheaper route.

It is very mockingbird inspired...softer lines. I've always been a sucker for teles as well  :icon_thumright:

When you say "semi-hollow", I'm interested in how you handled the centerblock or bridge mounting? I had always read that spalted maple is wood that had a fungus and it was softened by that - OK for cosmetic, but maybe not as good for structural purposes. Even though soft maple is probably way harder than mahogany, I would guess that the commercial stuff is stabilized somehow - they wouldn't want a stack of boards infecting another stack in the warehouse.

There is solid wood directly under the bridge...I sort of left a block of walnut under the spalted maple in the center going all the way to the neck from the bridge. The chamber goes all the way around the center block. I left about an inch or so of walnut on the sides and about 1/2 inch on the bottom of the chamber. I've heard that spalted maple can be weak and hard to work with (so naturally I decided to work with it), but it wasn't too much of a chore. I did want to support the bridge with the walnut, just for strength. This particular piece didn't have as much spalting as some pieces i've seen on the internet, so maybe it can be alot harder to work with.

That sir, is a fine work of art  :icon_thumright:

Very impressive build indeed

:kewlpics:

Spalted is one of the most attractive woods for the price. Love it, except the tele knob plate. Good choices.

Diggin' the guitar!!  Where did you get the tele-ish plate for the knobs?  I've been looking for modified tele type plates and don't see to many around.
