Why, what's the point....

I play seven-strings a lot, and it's got a variety of different advantages. Jazz players like them to do solo gigs, because of the extra bass notes. Metal kids like them for the sweeping, and the down-tuned Satanic grunting opportunities. I personally really like the feel of the wider neck and the hand positioning that's defined by it, and not so much the need for lower notes. I would absolutely have to try an eight-string before I decided it was bunk - it seems to me that the biggest problem would be string gauges. You can now get .006's and of course .080's, but unless you go to the fanned frets the extremes don't sound very good. I'd rather have one of these:

I just like it for the extended range. I don't stay down in the low range all the time, but I do like to go down there quite a bit.
I could understand a 7 string guitar (especially since my current favorite tuning is B-Std.) but, 8 is just unnecessary, IMO. Although a friend of mine owns one and DEFINITELY puts it to good use.
