Why tru-oil

How does Tru oil work over dye? Does it smear the dye? I've used it over bare wood but I think I'm going to try dying my next build. I like how simple it is to use and I don't want to stray far from my very limited experience.

Try it out on a scrap piece. Can't say definitively whether it would or not, as it'd depend on your base dyeing/staining technique & process. It's a good way to stray safely* to expand the limits of experience and gain more of it. ;)

I personally haven't used TO over color since I use the TO to highlight the natural wood. Anything with color gets a standard lacquer top coat in my projects.

* or, as we say in IT, test in production and gain a whole lot of experience in a very short period of time. Might not be good experience, and your project may be borked beyond recovery....but you certainly do learn from it! :D

I used to tell my younger engineers working for me:

I base my decisions on my good judgement.
I base my good judgement on my experience.
I base my experience on my bad judgement.

I have a 1/4” thick sheet of alder to practice on. I will use both sides and see how I like it. If I’m not happy, I’ll just use Tru oil over the d
Body with no dye.
