I was going to buy stuff to complete my ongoing Warmoth build, and all Dimarzio Super Distortion was out of stock... Apparently a "famous" swedish rock star was in that store buying TEN Super Distortions for his upcoming tour.

The question is; why buy TEN pickups, when all his guitars already have that pickup?! :icon_scratch: ??? :dontknow:

I didn't know that Björn Ulvaeus used Super Distortion pickups.

I guess you learn something everyday...

You buy ten because when you're touring, you don't want to end up screwed if anything goes wrong. Also, at least in the USA, you can give purchases like that favorable tax treatment as a business expense.

HAhaha I would probably have max 2-3 extra pickups if even that. I don't know how big his tour is but I think this is a bit overkill.. Hahaha!!! Porbably I'm just grumpy because my guitar build is now delayed because of him hahaha

There are a lot of reasons.

He probably wanted to test all of them and pick his favorite. Just because you buy ten pickups that are spec'd to be the same, it does not mean they will actually be the same.

Or maybe he had a number of guitars that needed new pickups.

Or maybe he just felt like buying pickups.

There could also, just possibly, have been some of that "Look what a big rock star I am, I can buy every pickup in the shop just to show off how important my tour is!" vibe.  But you said it was the Super Distortion, so that rules Yngwie Malmsteen out.

I don't think Malmsteen lives in Sweden anymore. Besides - he would have bought the shop.  :icon_biggrin:

"Smuggle" them back to Swedeland and sell them for 3 times the price - VAT? Hawhawhaw. Plus the tax thing here could make them "free", to a certain extent. It depends on how you structure your 'tools' deductibles, and whether the IRS is going to assign an agent to follow you around trying to deduce which pickup you're using when.

:icon_scratch: I think you missed that Cederick is in Sweden?

That was my thought. We're kinda spoiled here in the states with the availability of things. For instance, it's easier/cheaper to get computer motherboards and CPU chips here than it is in Singapore/Malaysia/Taiwan/etc. where they actually make the things. You'd think shipping alone would make them more expensive, but no.

Exactly  :icon_biggrin:

And it's not Yngwie, he plays Seymour Duncan...

A guitar in E standard, Eb, Drop D, DADGAD and open C - and then a backup to each one.
Would the same type of pickup really make that much of a difference??

Yeah. But Malmsteen has made 7567 other much better tunes. I know the internet people like to put him down. But the guy has amazing skills and has fostered a genre in music all by himself.

No question about it. But, that video was nearly seizure-inducing, there wasn't anything about the guitar to write home about, and the whole thing was just "poppy". Not what you'd expect from a talent like Yngwie's. Sounds like something a recording industry exec would force out of a player to satisfy some contractual obligation.
